Hi All Im new to this forum and have a small collection of tilleys, ive only been collecting for a few years but I use them whenever I can, anyway, one of lamps, which is the guardsman model, has a G.E.C glass globe, as in general electric company, has anybody else seen one before? are they rare? Any replies are much appreciated, just as i've never seen another. Many thanks
I’m quite sure most of us here will have seen or owned a few. Definitely not rare. Nice Guardsman though.
Thankyou, i've used this site over the years as a great reference point, so decided to join up, I will post more in the future.
GEC globes were used as WD or MOD stock. But most were not taken up. So they were sold on to the market. Look for a government mark, that will up the resale value, If not it was just run down the production line. Waiting to be stamped to what force or department they were due to head to. A lot of the old GPO lamps had them. My last original GPO Lamp, in a box complete with WD stamps went for a small fortune.
One GPO Tilley lamp, stamped almost to death with GPO and a broad arrow. If you are lucky you can still find exWD/MOD mantles with the government stamps on them. The Brass one is an Ex Civil Defense one. I got 2. The one shown was all ready assembled. The other was dismantled and in a shipping container, were it sits today. Never been opened and still has the cloth and glue seals on the box.
The trouble with acronyms that are country-specific is that they are difficult to get your head around. MOD is Ministry of Defence (in Australia, for example, it would be DoD, Department of Defence…). GPO is General Post Office. But I’m stuck on WD. Is it “Works Department? I’ll have to check whether I’ve found any “G. E. C.” glass in Australia. Cheers Tony
