Busy with an Optimus 350 that is steadfastly refusing to be tamed. going through all the threads and posts i have eliminated most of the problems Cleaned carburetor including preston loop, replaced all seals and pips, valve packing, adjusted pricker rod, cleaned the jet - marked with the number 3 only, sealed the nozzle and jet with a bit of gun gum. Have not been able to free up the mixing paddle but it is stuck in the general upright position. Leak tested all good. Cleaned fount and filled with good paraffin. Test fired the lamp and found it was pulsating wildly. Cured that with 2 pieces of RG58 co-ax cable braid. One piece inserted in the other and fitted over the pricker rod. Then i had the glowing J tube and a halo around the mantle. No setting of the air gap seemed to make much difference except when i got to about 14mm the mantle burned with black spots. Changed the jet and needle to new 350. Now she runs the best so far with the air gap at about 14.9mm. The J tube does not glow anymore but i still have a blue halo. Changed to a different mantle but halo remains. lower pressure changes the halo to an orange halo. She runs best and brightest at high pressure - and HOT Any suggestions as to what else i can look at please. Will post detailed pictures later.
Perhaps the inner hood/burner is worn, you could try fitting a known good one, it's worth a try anyway.
@JEFF JOHNSON Hi Jeff, eventually got back to the 350. Took the hood with J tube and burner off my Stenly - everything on that lamp is Gloria and works a treat and fitted to the 350. Small adjustment to the air gap and test burn all good. Fitted a Butterfly 41 mantle and she lit no fuss. Small adjustment to the mixing paddle and let her run for 2 hours with no globe or ventilator. No pulsing and quieter than my other PX type lamps. Now to look for a complete J tube assembly.
