Morning, Well it was inevitable - a Tilley had to land on my bench at some time. This is what i assume is a X246A with no date stamp that i could find. Unfortunately no globe but apart from that it seems complete. Had a quick tear down and the first thing i noticed was the burner had the air tubes "drooping"at a downwards angle. The body was also dented and decidedly triangular. Will this still work? Pump tube is dented and the control cock is going to need serious attention. Spindle is wobbly and loose and i have not figured out if it is a serviceable item. The reducing bush for the cock is stuck in the fount Hood is missing a fair amount of enamel and has a dent or two. The vaporizer rod moves against the spring but i have not tried to extract the rod. All seals are rock hard and will see what i can make myself Will probably clean and fix what needs to be fixed and use the lamp. Any words of wisdom appreciated.
It's a Tilley X246 (before the X246A), and before date stamping in 1958, so 54-58. The control cock soindle is not "servicable", except for removing and replacing the washer inside the packing box that acts as a seal to stop fuel leaking. It looks like its had a hard life and your burner is probably past its use by date - but you could clean it up and if the parts are loose, either put it back together with exhaust/manifold paste or sil-braze the air tubes back in place. All the rubber seals should be replaced with new viton ones. Cheers Tony
That burner has suffered burning up in the dome. It has got so hot the brass has softened and the weight of the hood has pushed down on the air tubes. Here is what happens if you let that go on for too long. In a stove the same effect is called underburn and it is usually caused by a lack of tank pressure. In my case I turned my back on the lamp for a while and when I came back it had killed itself. I don't do that any more.
Well for the time being this is as far as I will go with this lamp. Replaced all seals made from Viton sheet I had. - bit thick. Assembled burner with high temp thread sealer, cleaned and drop peened the vaporiser, used a 500cp single tie mantle unpicked on one end. Made a spirit cup out of a copper end cap. She lit up but burns with a slight yellow halo. Still no globe but if I can find another lamp I might use it to make one complete lamp. Easy lamp to work on and I am not unpleased.
Tilley globes are not easy to find here anymore. If you have a dremel tool and diamond disc you can cut a 300cp cadac globe down to size with a mesh screen at the bottom . Works for a user lantern.
