A find at this year’s Ashover Festival of light, a Veritas bowl fire. Complete and original including the guard, surely, which fits like a glove. Only … In THIS thread @David Shouksmith presented his example with what he himself considered to be an unattractive guard, saying, In response, @JEFF JOHNSON said, Here’s David’s fire and guard. Here’s the guard on my Veritas. Jeff, are you sure David’s guard is correct? Maybe you have a contemporary catalogue illustration to draw on? John
Hello John, as far as I know it's correct, but it's possible that a simpler guard was made later, it would have reduced production costs, I shall check my paperwork tomorrow. Jeff.
Hello John, I have not found any paperwork yet, perhaps Neil/Mackburner will have something. presscall
@Mackburner Thanks for seeking that out Neil. Much obliged. No doubts there, the ‘chicken wire’ guard is correct. So much of the Veritas has elegant lines that guard looks like an afterthought, or Friday afternoon job to enable the designer to go home early. I’m happier with the one I have. Maybe a version, as @JEFF JOHNSON has said.
I see in the PLC I have this as Model B53 but I'm damned if I can find where I got that info from. There must be some other paperwork very well hiden in my archive pile which is eluding me. ::Neil::
@Mackburner The original cream finish remains on the base of my bowl fire and with it the model number stamp as you see. John
Reckon it look better with the guard on yours john the other one looks over the top too busy like Cheers pete
@pete sav It does, Pete, I agree. I’ve just got to get it running properly. Jet’s massively worn. Veritas jet on right, compared to a 0.32mm stove jet, when the correct orifice should be 0.18 to 0.2mm. Fortunately, @Henry Plews cleverly sussed that a Primus 1020 jet fits the Veritas vaporiser threads. I happen to have a spare Primus jet and matching pricker - just as well, because the Veritas pricker is a goner. Some work to do … Cheers, John
Thanks Jeff. The Primus jet worked well. Test firing without the Primus pricker yet installed. The ‘port’ in the mantle to play a flame on the vapouriser. Low tank pressure … Higher tank pressure
Interesting and thanks for this but I must have seen a stamp B53 so being a cynical old git I have to wonder if this is a date mark and not the model. Advertised in late 1952 so dates in '53 would be reasonable? I no longer have one of these so I can't check for a base mark but maybe there are other examples out there? ::Neil::
You? Never!!! Seems reasonable to posit as you have Neil and a short production run as is supposed is consistent with a 1953 date. Other examples to draw on would indeed be helpful, most recently that of @Robert Radcliffe. Rob, yours has its original paint, so presumably the inscription on the base is still intact? John
Another thought this morning. These were I presume marketed by both Veritas and Thermidor. That stamp includes "Patent Pending" so I wonder of that only appears on the Thermidor versions as they would likely have been the manufacturers but not on the Veritas examples? ::Neil::
Thanks for giving it further thought Neil. No trace of a brand label on the tank, not so much as the partial outline of one, so no clue in that respect. John
