Do any of you kind people know how to make a kinky BR49 wick? I’ve tried stove rope, cotton etc but just can’t get kinky enough! Any tips like material and method would be a huge help. MANY THANKS.

The depths and range of knowledge of you people is staggering and I much enjoy reading the often amusing and always informative threads. I’ve seen the Ebay wicks but am still keen to know how to make my own, if anybody knows. Thanks again.
I have made some wicks in the past, but the effort and time made it pointless. base-camp.co.uk Mike here does wicks and is very helpful
There are no daft questions and you are restoring a BR49 so a very worthy project ! We all share the same desire to see as many lanterns in the world working and being loved
@achich I had a look at an original one and firstly they are asbestos. It is woven around a wire core. The wire is what allows the tight bends and keeps the shape. To make one I would suggest stove rope and insert a wire down its centre. The ends of the rope will need binding to prevent fraying. Good luck.
Thanks everyone. I’ve bought the Ebay ones but feeding a wire down some fire rope is an inspired idea. I’ll give it a go and fire glue the frayed ends. You never know - I may be successful and if so, will let you know.
I totally agree with that statement. I'm sure most of us has thought that statement before, and in the end we were glad we asked the question. How else do we learn, we are not all meant to be rocket scientist. I for one, am proud to ask any question no matter what others think.
