Bought a house built in 1882. Found this lamp. How did it work? I want to get it working again. What type of fuel was used.

    Welcome aboard!

That is a gravity fed lamp and the link below shows the relevant gallery page.

Several members collect that genre of lamp and they will be able to offer assistance with yours.

    Welcome,
Nice and well preserved lamp you have.
Whatever you do, test it outside and be sure you know how it should work and for all what to do when it doesn't function and spits out burning liquid fuel.

    Hi Ed,

You have got a stand gravity lamp from the first decade of the 1900,s!
Several manufactures of that type of lamp, but one big company is the
"Best Light Company", Canton Ohio, USA.
The fuel for these lamp is gasoline and your model is lit by a match flame
to the generator for pre heating and then a match flame to the incandescent mantle on the "gas burner".
I would suggest you don´t try this without the knowledge of how they work.
I think I may have a lighting manual for these type of lamps somewhere
on my hard drive and files. Will come back if I find one!

Note that white gas/Coleman Fuel/Naptha is the appropriate fuel and really all I would suggest with a lamp of this age. Learn what you are doing and how to do it before getting too deep in this. Light in a safe area and preferable on a non combustible surface. A knowledgable collector in your are may be of great help. Where are you located in Canada? There are also some facebook groups local to Canada where you may have better luck finding someone local to you.
