My My girl hates the sound of the Petromax and only joins me outside with her noise cancelling headphones...
Check the J-tube. If it has the screw, remove it and replace the J-tube with one without screw. Other petromax style lantern which make less noise often have no adjustment screw for the mixing paddle.
