More than likely, I’ll have a little goosie later. The base to the frame is “bowled” to account for the extra 2 - 4 mm on the the top of the tank. I don’t really understand why the extra strength in the tank, as a compound curved shape wouldn’t deform under extra pressure. The base however is a different story.

As soon as the frame comes back from sand blasting, as it was in a very bad state. I’ve got a couple of 500cp mantles coming from Tilley as well so hopefully will show it burning soon.

The MK1 eyeball is not a reliable measuring device ‘cos it’s not calibrated. If you get the 12 inch distance right then a foot candle meter will read candle power direct. Should be the same number as a Lux metre at 1 meter. These lamps vary a great deal. I have measured one X246B at 243cp, which was exceptional, but most of them do about 100 to 150cp. I also measured my 500 series at 236.5cp. The one thing I have never done is look at the tanks to see if the 500 type is reinforced or heavier than the normal B type or worked out what the pressure is at the 150 pump strokes Tilley recommend for the 500 series. That B tank is prone to distort so the 500 type certainly should be stronger but I suspect not. Wants investigating perhaps?
