This is my Petromax 900 Little Baby 100cp lantern. It has scratches "1 3" on the base of the tank, so I'm assuming January 1933. It was found in Australia. It came to me in pieces and with a Ditmar Maximette vapouriser that does not fit (see discussion here). Many of the components had been chromed so I though initially it may have been NOS, but now I know a little bit of the history. I used parts from another, incomplete, Petromax 900 (here) to provide missing parts to get this lantern running. Those parts are the vapouriser (minus the nipple); and some pump parts for the holding the pump leather. I sourced a reproduction nipple from Korea. The screw and dome nut to hold the cap on the hood are not Petromax. The top cap of the hood is not original. It came with the chromed parts. "1 3" Up and running A fine little lamp Cheers Tony
@Tony Press Very nice restauration and presentation I've read "1 8" but I'm not 100% sure.Perhaps @Jörg Wekenmann can provide clarity with the help of his documents and drawnings.
@Reinhard & @Jörg Wekenmann I looked very hard at the scratches and could not see any attempt to form a complete “8”, although it does look as if the “3” could be 8. Does the control wheel provide a clue? Tony
Hi Tony, the Hasag 900 LittleBaby was introduced in 1931. The year 1933 would fit perfect to your lantern. I have this spare part list in my archive: You can read in the red square: Ersetzt Stückl v.4.8.31 Replaces part list from 4.8. 1931 The part list from me ist from 6.5. 1932 This proves that the No. 900 was already manufactured in 1931. Jörg
@Jörg Wekenmann Wouldn't the spare parts list fit later vintages from the 1930s just as well ? Which part is meant by the zinc tube (Zinkrohr) at position 7 marked Rajek Version? (Franz Rajek) @Jörg this is a Petromax 900 and not a Hasag .
To me in Position 6 it reads "Mischrohr" made from "Messingrohr 11 x 1" (Material). Position 7 reads "Stift" made from "Messing-Draht 6-kant 1 mm" (Material), which should be for the needle holder. Below that underlined it reads "Mischrohr" again, and under "Bemerkung" it reads "Racek-Ausführung". So everything seems to be plausible to me.
Hello Reinhard, You are right! I made a mistake as I had previously looked at the article with the Hasag spare parts. Here is another parts list for the No. 900 from 1938. With your keen eyes (I wish I had them!) you'll easily spot the differences. Regards Jörg
I wish I could read German Current Handwriting better. Takes some time to figure out what the meaning is. Erik
If it was Sütterlin I could read it provided it was a clear handwriting. But it is Kurrent - Wikipedia German Kurrent which is a lot harder to read for regular present-day-people who never had that at school. Only single chacracters of Sütterlin used to describe vectors. Erik
typed down the above [first page oft the] parts list for the Petromax 900 dated 18. June 1938. Erik if I find the time I might do a translation.
@Reinhard, @Jörg Wekenmann, @Erik Leger, @Martin K. Given that the control wheel on the Petromax 900 above predates the 1938+ “two-part” control wheel, do you think my scratch date is 1933 or 1938? Scratch date: Control wheel on this lantern: Later control wheel (which @Reinhard says is 1938 onwards). Thank you in advance. Tony
