Can anyone ID this lamp please

Had this lamp for ages. Does anyone know the model and whether it is a Tilley? Thanks

That is another style of a converted Tilley X-246-B and the link below shows it's siblings.

Right. Thanks for that. I was given the lamp years ago from a chap whose father used the lamp when he worked for British Rail.

 

The conversion has been done well and in my opinion, the lamp is well worth fettling.

 

This is a whole new world to me So it’s a standard Tilley lamp that was converted for a specific need? who would have carried out the conversion? British Rail?

 

Yes Chris, London Transport I believe. This is my LT1.

Your example does seem to be different from other examples in the gallery? It looks to have a burner with 2 air tubes not the standard x246b 3 air tube type
Is the green coating on the handle a type of plastic? (It resembles other LT types that have green plastic on their handles)

I think it sold recently on ebay, i have the other two versions of the LT2, one still has the green plastic covering which sagged and stank once the lantern was running!

is this the one that Jeff mentioned regarding the one that Phil H posted t other day? Does look tres similar from here..

I don’t have one but I bet they work well and good for LT for sorting out one from parts.. had to be better than lugging bottles of LPG up the miles of permanent way to the job

 

That makes me think the open section would be better with some stories about railway work. Esp with lamps such as this.

My stories would be less kerosene and more electrical in nature but I am sure we would all enjoy.

 

I do have somewhere a wonderful archive image from circa 1969 of track relaying on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway … the illumination at night? Three tilleys on the leading engineers trolley … I shall dig it out and get hunting

Belay that... it's all on film via the BFI! I helped dig it out for the railway for the 50th anniversary celebrations last year. There's an entire section starting at roughly 2.50 called 'A Tilley Night'... some of it is a little blurry... but guaranteed to be of interest! Found here for free on the BFI player...
