I wanted to add one of those Coleman Seasons lamps to my collection, so I ordered one from Japan (new, beautiful, with metal case). The seller advertised "Pack carefully" and it was delivered by FedEx, so what could go wrong? It arrived today... with broken globe. What would you do? I contacted the seller, and now waiting what solution he will offer. I also notified FedEx, so they have record what happened. (no official reclaim yet).

I have several lamps from USA, U.K. ... many other things from Japan, but this time, it did not survive their "care" during delivery.

    Sorry for a sad story.

Probably not enough - a single layer of bubble wrap and some paper between the globe and the metal case, Two layers of bubble wrap around the Coleman cardboard box and then seller's cardboard box. The package looked undamaged from the outside, though.

I have had poorly packed globes survive and very well packed ones turn up broken. Yours sounds insufficient and probably it got broken with impact between the globe and the frame. There is often not much space available and really they should be shipped seperately - but that ramps up the shipping costs.

That's a terrible thing to happen to you mate.
I always request that the globe, be packed separately in a smaller box, and then put inside the bigger parcel.
So far this has worked for me, I have had parcels from the UK, USA and here in Australia.
Have you heard any news yet?

The seller offered me a replacement globe, but the basic one not "Seasons" i.e. different look and value... so we are negotiating a better solution. I hope so...

Good to know. The seller advertised "Pack carefully" so I expected It is not necessary to ask for extra care. But next time, I will be rather annoying customer that disappointed customer.

I had a Veritas Superb globe arrive in pieces and I nearly cried as those things are very rare now. It was packed in multiple layers of bubble wrap and honestly looked like it should have survived... but that crunching sound is truly depressing! I couldn't bring myself to open the wrapping and it sat for months before I reluctantly threw it away.

    You have my sympathy!

Not sure what it does exactly mean...

BTW: Do you think that it is possible to find somewhere spare globe form Coleman Seasons 2011?

I believe it means, you send the original item back, and get a full refund.
Then you buy the same product again at a 30 percent discount.

I thought that is what it meant... But does it make sense? Sending it back and forth? Before this response, I suggested that they could buy same lamp locally in Japan (that would be more affordable for them than for me) and send me just that unbroken globe. As result, they would have a lamp with basic globe (they offered me earlier) that they could sell to someone else. In now suggested solution, they will also have such lamp with basic globe to sell, but they will lose 30 %, shipping fees and I will have trouble with getting the VAT back and paying it again (I had to pay VAT in cash to FedEx on delivery).

BTW: I like Japanese, but sometimes they are really weird. Once I ordered some tools from Japan and then they sent me an e-mail: one of items you ordered, is not manufactured anymore, but we have similar/better for the same price. My response: I am OK with that, just send me the similar item instead. But they insisted on cancelling the order and placing a new one (which caused me some loss on exchange rates/fees and loss of time).

Whenever I've sent out lanterns, I've always 'double-boxed' the globe i.e. in its own small box within the main box. I've never had a breakage so far and that's over many years.

Conversely, I've received many lanterns with broken globes due to poor / lazy packing. Leaving the globe on the globe cage will usually result in breakage. Jamming some sort of packing between the glass and metal is useless since it will transmit the shock to the glass rather than insulate it from the shock...

We finally settled on a partial refund (they were unable/unwilling to find a spare part and sending whole lamp back and forth does not make sense for me). So I am looking for a new globe now...

At least the seller admitted that it was a packing fault and promised to pack it better next time.
