In Jan. 2025 @Anthony alerted me of an alcohol lamp he had seen on Facebook. We both thought it was a German made lamp but couldn't find the right manufacturer. At the same time the owner of the lamp made a post in the German Pelam forum; you can see it here .... Hanging Lamp Identification - Pelam.de Forum I was able by finding a 1908/1910 Glinicke/Zehnpfund patent, and Anthony confirmed that by a photo of another identical lamp with a knob logo, to pinpoint that the manufacturer was Eckel & Glinicke, Berlin. A couple of months later I was lucky and able to get an example of that lamp myself from a Swedish seller. This is an Eckel & Glinicke alcohol hanging lamp Invert No.5. This lamp was sold in US as Invert No.5 and in AUS as "Batavia". In Sweden it was sold as the "Sinumbra - Lampan No.5" from the Swedish company "Aktiebolaget Sinumbra". In a Sinumbra 1914 catalogue there is a variety of hanging/wall/stand lamps with that lamp burner head. The lamp came more or less complete. I just had to fix a suitable globe glass. There is a "pump" device for getting alcohol from the tank to the pre heater ring inside the burner. In most other lamps with a type of pre heater pump, the alcohol is pressed down to a connecting thin tube ending in the pre heater cup. For this Sinumbra lamp you elevate the alcohol upwards the "pump" tube and it then spills over in slots to an outer tube that ends with a thin brass tube. So a kind of reverse pumping; a bit strange but interesting technical solution. I used a preformed rigid mantle for this lamp. The light output is said to be 100 - 120CP. /Conny 1908/1910 patent.............. Ads ................................ 1914 Sinumbra-Lampan AB Sinumbra Stockholm....
Hi Conny, the patina couldn't be better for that lamp. Great find. Strange that Welsbach was the retailer in Australia.
Another interesting lamp in your impressive collection Conny Thanks for all info. Albert Glinicke sounds familiar and Polish all the best, Piotrek
Thanks @Conny C ! Great to see ! thanks for the patent diagrams, it makes sense of the shape of the tank and the housing of the wick Reading the advertisements it’s even smaller than an early Tilley donut ! It must be dinky ! regards pb
@podbros Yeah, most of the alcohol donut lamps are tiny. The Invert Nr.5 and Hasag Lipsia around 23 cm, and Wiktorin and Mundus II even smaller, just 19 cm. /Conny
