This is newbie question, never happened to me but i like know what happens when mantle brokes down middle of burning? is there big flames or something like that. Sorry about my bad language
Hi Ari, I've tried a Tilley X246 without mantle and all you get is little blue flames like on a stove, no big flames. The risk of damage exists when there is a hole in the mantle and a jet of hot gas exits there and hits the glass globe which might get white heat marks or even get melted at this point.
Hi Ari, This depends on different factors: Does the lamp rest on the same place or do you carry it around where it gets knocked, esp. during transport in a vehicle The quality of the mantle itself is important, some last longer than others If you work on a lamp you will surely damage the mantle sometimes
I have a lamp here with a Coleman #99 mantle that has been there since 1982 and done hundreds of hours burning. I have also had mantles break in the first minute. Some last and some don't. Just check it every time before lighting as a damaged mantle can break the globe. ::Neil::
Hi, with regard to your question about how long will a mantle last, then the answer is"How long is a piece of string?" As already mentioned elsewhere, some last for ages, while others merely for minutes. I have just had a look at my log (I log all the hours my lamps burn) And my No. 1 lantern, a Tilley X246B (yes, I know) has done 24 hours on one mantle, and is still going strong. I will post further info when it needs changing.
