I picked a 300x up last week from a local antique cellar (£15) minus the big cap, but with an original Bialaddin green stamp glass. After getting a new cap through the post this morning and dunk testing it, it unfortunately had 3 extremely small leaks from the usual area. I do have some JB Tank Weld in the shed from my automotive days, but tbh, though it may work, I just can't be fussed with the hassle. Soldering similar and I've no decent iron or flux around, so nah. However, I do have a sacrificial 315, that I know works, so I'll use that. I think the 300x hood very nice, so will make a nice Frankenstein lamp. The toothed big cap exterior will be missed, but I've got a Vapalux military 300 that needs serious resurrection sometime so I'll use it on that. Quick pic:
This is what it looks like now. Just a couple of coats of clear lacquer to apply and that's about it. I had a spare black, reproduction Tilley Pork Pie hood to rest on top to see how it looks. I think I might get a brass one actually, although the all black top does appear to fuse well with the Sun Yellow Rustoleum.
The yellow was left over Rustoleum Sun colour which I used on two B/R (49) Guardsman tanks. Just enough left for this little creation. The repro Pork Pie hood is now fixed properly and will stay on it. Also, I think over a period of time, I will carefully rub parts of the chimney down with very fine grit paper, so it gives a bit of basic/rough hue to the brass. I think that will finish it off nicely.
I decided to rub the chimney with fine grit, to give it a rougher , weathered hue on the brass. Definitely sets it off nicely and I'll light it this week I reckon. Not a bad lantern for circa 35 quid all in.
