I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a modern Chinese-made Petromax for some time now, so when this one appeared on eBay at a reduced price I snapped it up, because the matt-nickel is my favourite finish and no longer available.

Given the criticism they receive I’m surprised at the quality! It seems well-built and not at all flimsy. Even the shade is heavier and made with a thicker gauge steel than I expected.

I’m unsure when they discontinued the matt-nickel and I’m not aware of how to date it given it has the 6 number serial code on the bottom.

I like that the globe still has an “E” in the logo unlike the current “P”. And the pink plastic globe protectors placed top and bottom sure did their job for safe postage.

The problem I have now is that I don’t want to light it, so it might need to live on display for a while.

A nice find. I've never seen that variation on a Chinese-Petromax before.
