This is a Petromax 1500 from 1965 ( 0854 ) , used for heating , lighting and cooking . I had to buy the glass cylinder and the radiator separately .The additional cooking ring for larger pots is unfotunately missing . One hole in the support frame was to small. Therefore , one of the three Supports had been incorrectly positioned for 60 years ! I noticed it when I opened the metal door and installed the radiator .
@Reinhard I have never seen this lamp in person, but it appears to be very bright, and I imagine it would feel quite warm when used as a radiator as well. Shinzo
Jeff,Shinzo and Dean it's great that I caught your attention Switching from lighting to heating and vice versa is a bit fiddly because the 500cp mantle has very little space in the radiator. That's why I bought a second inner cleading #117 .The radiator heats more efficiently without the mantle. Shinzo,I also noticed that the light is extremely bright.I think that's because of the high airflow, since the cover doesen't have a proper cap.The warming effect meets expectations, but you don't break a sweat.I haven't tried cooking yet. I don't know how well the Petromax 1500 was received by customers back then. But in my opinion, Petromax reached it's peak in terms of quality with this product back in the 60s.
Hi Reinhard, Congratulations on this superb Petromax No. 1500 lantern. Its look is truly incredible; every time I see this model, I think to myself that the engineers of that era really pushed their ideas to the limit. One day I think I'll add one to my collection. As always, a restoration done with the utmost care. All the best to you. Regards.
Yes Patrick , this maschine is something special. I must admit I have difficulty dealing with it properly. When operating without glass and without mantle, the heat rises so extremely that everything at the top glows red-hot .This is due to the flames being thrown back upwards from the bottom of the radiator.First,I kept lowering the pressure, without success. Then I reducted the device's output to 350 cp. As a result, the flames became increasingly yellow and longer. They completely sooted up the radiator, the burner, and the mixing tube. After an hour, the maschine simple shut off. Then I tried adjusting the mixture with the screw in the j-tube to reduce the flames.Without success. Then I reattached a 500cp nozzle and this time attached a 500cp mantle. This is very difficult because the radiator cup is not positioned centrally under the burner. Now the Petromax 1500 worked without flames coming out of the top or anything glowing that shouldn't be glowing. The heating power is lower with the mantle attached than without.but the device then runs perfectly; it does not overheat. Perhaps I should have looked at the instructions more closely, but I don't think they are very clearly described.
I wonder if Coleman style long mantle would perform better or worse in heater-mode? Most likely worse... It is interesting that despite having a "modern" Preston loop generator its performance depends so much on the direct heat from mantle to the generator vertical pipe and when that radiator is assembled around the mantle it impacts so much lamp performance that it works fine only with 500cp nipple. Interesting lamp and info presented all the best, Piotrek
