@David Shouksmith Way back when the Lamp Guild was first proposed I sent Fil a pile of stuff that I was happy to freely share, then I had a request for a $10 US payment to become a founder member. Fil clearly did not share my sense of humour, because at that time everything was done by snail mail, and being a tight git, I didn't want to pay so I posted a photocopy of a $10 bill. Didn't hear anything more.
I hadn't realised that to become a founder of the Guild you had to pay - obviously once you'd proved your worthiness! According to several sources, FG didn't have a sense of humour. I'll not pass on other things folk have said about him. Anyway, the Thomas Kerosafe I have and mentioned earlier, that upset him so much came from you via eBay - many thanks!
Hello Juan, Neil was of Scottish descent on his Father's side. This link shows information about his clan. http://www.scotlandinoils.com/clan/Clan-MacRae.html
Hi Juan, With a name like McRae his ancestors were certainly Scottish. I believe the location is somewhere in the Hebrides, I don't know the exact place or even which Island but I understand that his daughter considers it "special".
Oh, I thought it was the 3rd of the month. No matter, there'll be a lamp burning here tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday night too.
You're right Henry! It was the Erinerun from my Oulook system. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to today's date!
Yes - according to a message I got from Facebook yesterday, Neil would have been 82 on the 3rd May...
… and old Tilley lantern as the dark comes in; and a nod to Jim Dick, too: Jim’s copper plated reflector. Tony
Jörg, thanks for bringing this to our minds! I took out a lantern just now to his remembrance, and I think the choice was good: an old Coleman LQ327 lantern, and the choice was because that one was Neils' all time favourite. He often mentioned that, and when I firstly posted this particular lantern in the reference gallery 16 years ago he said: And of course he was more than right, because now this lantern is over 100 years old, rather than the 85 he mentioned back then, and it still lit up without any fuss, and worked as supposed in the snow, wind and cold! And it hasn't been touched for over ten years before tonight. He sure knew his lamps and lanterns!
