They look good in the snow, esp that tree. Snow seems a distant memory here, I am currently standing in bright sunshine.
There has been some more snow yesterday and today, so here are my last two Coleman lanterns, they are hybrids, but in my opinion worth including. Correction, I do have one more Coleman lantern, but it uses Coleman fuel and I don't have any, I may fit a Coleman twin mantle paraffin burner and an R55 vapouriser/generator to it sometime. Perhaps some others could add their Coleman lanterns to this topic.
Sure thing. I took a Coleman 242B, since that one had some old gasoline in the tank. Must have been years since that one was lit last time, but it worked instantly. Coleman are the best! Funny thing! When I posted this lantern in the reference gallery ten years ago, I also included a winter picture (seen here). But of course... I love to take pictures of lanterns in the snow Here's some "cool" pics at -20 Celsius. Firstly I just placed it at the slope on the back of my house: Here's one at the place where I split and store my fire wood: I read in this thread that someone thought that lanterns left out in the cold would leave a thawed area around the base after a while, and even produce enough heat to make in sink in the snow, but I have never seen this happen when I'm out in the cold with my lanterns. They sink into the snow by their weight, but then they just sit there. I guess it may happen when you just are a few degrees below freezing, but hardly under actual winter conditions. Perhaps with extremely hot-running lanterns. I must make a test with an Optimus 930! I can actually see it happen with that one. Anyway! I think I will go out with another "cool" Coleman this weekend. It was long ago I lit my old CQ, so that would be a nice one to excercise.
Very nice. Really nice settings for the photographs too. The 201 is becoming my favourite lantern for around the yard already. The proportions, weight and bail are just ‘right’ . It is nicely balanced for me. The pricker is missing on my lantern and I am scouring the posts to try and figure out if I could possibly replace it. Not confident just yet. I have admiration for the skilled and gifted among us that can do such things. Thank you for the post and the pictures.
Yes, the 201 is a neat and handy lantern as is a Coleman 339. LesRiekie Some folk use a bristle from a brass brush as a replacement pricker, but I have not tried that. The link below shows another batch of winter lanterns. Winter lantern thread
A grand pair. Does the 228 have a small fount, or a large globe and vent? I’d love to see them side by side. thank you for the pics
Hi @LesRieki , Acoording to the Coleman 'Bible' it's the standard 2 pint (US) fount and the standard globe, the same as on the 220J. Sorry but I don't have a pic of those two together, however, I do have a shot of them with my Tilley X246B and my Vapalux M1, hope that will be good enough. Tim
Wow. That 228 …i love it. Thank you for the pics. A lovely collection, right there. The vent and the bail really appeal to me..great proportions Les
Hi Les, to my knowledge, they're known as Big Hat's, however if you like big hatted lanterns, try these three. Tim
Very nice. I guess a practical aspect is the big hats will protect the globe if it tips over. ‘thanks for the pics. the one on the right is quite beautiful.
Hi Les, the one on the right is a Hipolito H502, a Portugese built Petromax, they started making them in Portugal in the '70's when production was moved there. They are as good as if not better than original German ones. I had to get a reflector for it as at 500cp it's eye burningly bright. Also sounds like a jet engine.
What a great collection. The hipolito looks special, the stainless, all the gadgets….like driving an old locomotive thanks for the pics. Very cool Les
