WW2 marked 1943 MMS, Sherwood of Birmingham hurricane lamp. I would love to know the history? Navy use? and rareness of this lantern? Thanks for answers
It’s also marked Tower Lite underneath, I wonder if the burner has been replaced at some point. Are there any markings on the glass. You do a see a lot of these lamps, but I don’t recall seeing many with the crows foot underneath. I must go a check some of mine. 1943 is quite interesting also as the majority of Military Vapalux 300 are marked 1943.
Tower Lite lamp with a Sherwoods burner, probably should have just a plain glass being Wartime , but normally Tower Lite lamps have a nice glass with a Lighthouse on, only rare as most have rusted away, i have 5 or 6 with the Broad arrow and dates from WW2 to the Cold War..
Hi cheers for that insight the glass is just plain bar an engraving that says made in england on it. So its a lantern from ww2? Thanks
Cheers for the info that makes sense. Yes it has plain glass with just made in england engraved. What would be the value oif it roughly? Thanks
Sherwood .... rings a bell of memories from childhood. Errol Flynn as Robin Hood. My favourite. Sorry for being off topic.
It is a connection though? Sorry about suggesting potential work with the moderators.. When you click on ‘home’ and the pressure lamp discussion forum comes up at the top, perhaps something could be included about valuations in the title with the EBay Listing policy? To make it easier to find? I realise that I am totally unaware of the amount of work that this would entail.. apologies again and thanks for making this place very homely
It’s a survivor.. they only had a wash of tin and dab of paint at best.. also made out of thin gauge for lightness I had a similar one but was in poor condition Other folks here will have knowledge of the history of the makers There was a link to a blow lamp forum that also had some history of metalworkers.. I’ll see if I can find it
@Nathan Richards Here’s a different link than I was thinking of.. lots of info to peruse.. hope it’s helpful www.oldcopper.org
Hi Nathan firstly I am a very new member and have difficulties posting a subject ! I have sent several messages to this effect to the management and am getting zero replies ! How do I message the RULERS ? secondly I am having zero joy in trying to find information on a lamp I just bought :- a SHERWOOD KEROSENE RAILEAY ONION LAMP ?? WAS i TAKEN FOR A RIDE thankyou for your time Peter Harrison Australia
Welcome, Peter. @peter harrison. I have reported your posting issue to the moderators. On the matter of your hurricane lantern, I’m not much help, but someone will come along with info. Best regards Tony
Well it ain't railway. The lantern is missing the globe and the guard rail (?) in the middle of the ball. Shining all round it would be a anchor light, white light to show the vessel is anchored. Also it then should have an ring at the bottom, for a rope, to prevent dangling around in the wind.
Sherwood's ltd of Birmingham (uk) made oil lamps and other brassware. The Onion lamps were as suggested above for nautical use. Other makers also made similar. They come up for sale in the UK reasonably frequently.
