Austramax Gen tube leak.

I'm chasing down a leak on my Austramax, I'm thinking it's coming from the base of the generator tube (26). There doesn't seem to be any sealing washer there can't see one on the parts diagram (?) Shall I try wrapping Teflon tape around it then assembling it, or any ideas?

I tried Teflon tape with no luck, I guess I'll try fine grinding paste - it's a compression joint. Would need to disassemble more to anneal it all.

 

Julian, you have sort of answered your own question.

The flange on the bottom of the generator tube needs to be annealed. Also check for any cracks or deformities.
When installing the generator tighten, loosen then rotate the generator 1/4 turn. Repeat a couple of times to reform the flange.

Job done! it Love again now. No leak, easy starter, too bright to look at! Annealing did the trick.

Dammit... fallen out of love with it (AGAIN!!) Look what it did to me today, the Austramax- great big yellow flameouts.
Grrr! Suppose I must have other leaks somewhere. I have the 'not-so-Handi' and my Veritas that I could fettle.
I found a new pricker for it which is good, (used to be a nice runner), but I feel like I'm chasing my tail.

 

Bugger!
Remove the cage and mixing assembly.
If you have an old nipple, solder the jet closed and install on generator.
If not Block the jet with candle wax or something similar that can be removed cleanly.
Pump up pressure and watck for leak.

 

Good plan Martin. It struck me that it could be a worn jet, Your test sounds like a good way to isolate the leak. I'll let you know how I go.

 

Now, I'm just wondering... could my problem be simple 'operator error'? Whilst I was testing it, it occurred to me that if I leave the pressure on when I turn flame off, then adjust the needle down, maybe kero can seep down outside of the tube while it's off, so when I start up again it has all this kero to burn. Seeps out of needle valve when not burning if pressure is kept on.

Yep... release tank pressure first then turn needle up to stop it (the pressure releasing stops it anyway).

Now, on to the Handi.

 

Julian, Operator error, yes.
Austramax do not have a fuel shutoff. The pricker is only to clean the jet, it isn't designed to stop fuel. You must bleed the pressure off to shut the lantern down and leave the blead screw open.
