I just wanted to contribute with a nice lamp from Finland also (in order to keep my country on the map). Here is a Valmet 300, a 300 cp kerosene lantern from around 1950 - 1956. I don't have any exact data on this one, except that it was listed on a price list for 3200,- Finnish Mark (FIM) in 1956, and that would be around 55€ today, so rather expensive for that time. On the VALMET price list it also says that it is 28 cm high and the weight is 2,250 kg (net) and that the fuelfount is 1,3 liter but you can only fill it with 0,9 liters and that would burn for 12 hours. Hi Anders: Very interesting lamp. Is that a generator vaporization tube encircling the mantle or an air tube for pre heating air for vaporization in the manifold?? Mike...
Hello Mike! The generator encircles the mantle and the pre-heating is the oldfashined way by pouring spirits in a small cup at the base of the generator and then lightening that. This lamp is in working condition, but rather heavy so I don't use it that often. Valmet used to make stuff for the army, you probably know the name from guns. After the war the company started to search for other things to make and they made lanterns and stoves amongst other things. Anders
David, that's how we write two point twohundred and fifty kilo over here, (hmm.. sounded strange, I mean two whole kilos and 250 grams). If I would have wanted to write two and a quarter tonners I would have written 2250 kg and some even writes 2 250 kg . The different ways to write numbers in different places makes it very difficult to do my job also, I am familiar with confusions about both masses and dates. The most stupid way of telling the date is IN MY OPINION to first say the month, then the day and last the year. I can understand the different ways of masses as they are rather logical after all, but dates??? Why on earth would someone first say the most significant data in the middle?? But after all that is of no matter, every place have their own way of telling the date and measures and that is nothing we will have to do anything about, at least not in this group
Yep. Take pi for instance. We write it as 3,14. In UK and some other countries (mainly English speaking), they without any understandable reason write it as 3.14!
I agree with you there. They are seriously heavy. The brass is almost twice as thick as that used on most other lanterns. I have found it very difficult to fill the spirit cup as the hole in the collar doesn't line up properly with the one in the base plate. Is yours like that or is mine put together wrong?
That looped tube is part of a "Preston" generator. You don't see these much in Coleman although they did use them in the Col-Max lanterns and the 238-240 series. There is a restriction between the two ends of the loop which is just wide enought to pass the pricker rod. This forces most of the rising fuel/gas around the loop which increases the heat transfer from mantle to fuel. First patented by an Australian in around 1910 and re patented by Hirschhorn in 1923. It is the standard kero generator for most Petromax type lanterns. ::Neil::
I think your lamp is correctly put together, it is extremely difficult with ordinary spirit cans to fill these ones up. I use an plastic Optimus spiritcan with a bent neck and I still have to tilt the lamp when I fill up the preheater cup with spirit. In the paper I have about this lamp, it says that a spiritcan, a wrench and a tool for the nipple and a manual is with the lamp. Maybe the spiritcan was designed a bit different than the ordinary spiritcans? Here is also a picture from when it is burning as someone wanted more action pictures Anders 1294417742-valmet.pdf
Yeah, I guessed that, Anders - I was just 'pulling your leg' as we say over here... Got to agree with you about those US dates - just defies logic, if you ask me. But it would be boring if we were all the same, eh..?
I tried to attach a pdf file also but couldnt make it full size so if someone is interested to see it they have to open up the link that you can find under one of the pictures.
Great lantern Anders. pdf-files never opens up in the posts, so a link is fine. An option would be to make it a jpg, and put in as a thumbnail instead, but then perhaps rather in the reference library.
Ompa hieno lamppu Nice lamp! Very soon i get my Valmet camping stove, those would be a great couple together
