Hi friends! I'm rebuilding a Coleman 200J and have the tip-cleaner assembly apart. (That's basically the retaining nut and brass retaining ring that holds the graphite packing around the brass control rod). I removed the old graphite packing, cap, and retaining ring, then had to basically scrape out all the packed graphite, but I cannot get the brass control rod out of the tip-cleaner body. The eccentric block/cleaning arm still moves up and down so the arm is still attached. Does the eccentric block need to be in the upper or lower position to remove the brass rod? Is there a particular technique for disengaging and removing it? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Heat, lots of force, likely destroy it. The end which has a little wiggle in its shape, fits in a horizontal slot on the e-block. That slot faces the rod end. When reassembled, the rod has to line up with the slot on the e-block. I hold the lever while screwing in the packing nut so the rods end matches up with the slot on the e-block so it doesn’t bind and bend the levers tip. Duane
For all of the 220 models with a black square on the collar (i.e. any after the F model) if you're smart you don't remove the tip cleaner lever. There is normally no need to and removing it will almost certainly damage it. In the earlier models the tip cleaner was easily removed. In the later models with the one-piece valve housing the rod is held in place by the packing. You either destroy the packing (no easy replacement available) or you bugger the wire. Either way you lose.
Thank you - yes, I can see this would take a lot of force to remove as I've pulled to the point (with heat applied) where I feel I'd break it if I pulled any harder...
Unfortunately I was getting small flames from the brass control rod area when lit - I got the packing out and ChatGPT gave me the advice to either buy the pre-made piece on Old Coleman (think it's 3.95) or getting some graphite ribbon to wrap as an impromptu packing piece - but not to bother to try and remove the brass control rod from the eccentric rod - but just to straighten the brass rod enough to slip the new graphite ring into its space down the rod and then re-bend once in place. Seemed to make sense but I've yet to try either.
