    Hi all,

I went to a camping store recently and noticed a kerosene pressure lamp and I feel a need to buy anything that burns kerosene so I did, on special for $29.95 reduced from $59.95 (bargain!),

It is what looks like a chinese copy of a petromax 350 CP lamp the brand is 'Egret'. The lamp is obviously a copy of a name brand, but it is built extrememly well, a very good copy I must say. Anyway I got it out, Ive never used one before, but got it lit. Cool. Now I decided to take it apart and put it back together again, everything is fine except one small thing: it gives an astronomical amount of heat and light, but it pulsates very slightly at about 2Hz or so. The adjustment of the air gap between the nipple where the little wire pricker comes out and the tube at the top as far as I can tell is meant to be adjusted with a little gauge that comes with the genuine petromax etc, but unfortunately that is one thing the chinese didnt copy exactly so Im unsure what is the best setting for this. Could this cause the pulsing? What should be the optimum setting?

    Hello and welcome aboard!

That could be the cause of the pulsing, but does the pulsing stop once the lantern has been running for a while?

Does this lantern have a pressure guage and if so are you pumping it until the needle is at the red line?

Lack of pressure can also cause pulsing.

If you add a few photos to your post that will help, Jeff.

Egret are made by Shanghai Light Industrial Products Import and Export Corporation, 209 Yuanmingyuan Road Shanghai, China. Same guys that make Anchor. The air gap should be 15mm on 350 and 500cp lamps. ::Neil::

I found one almost that cheap. We'll see if it was worth it when it gets here.

My Butterfly pulsed until I tightened the burner head into place. You might want to gently give that a try. I've heard that some folks put stove cement in to close any air leaks, but I haven't needed to go that far. Keeping the tank pumped up helps too. I've given in and just use the shop air compressor! :)

I have two Anchor 500cp lamps made by the same company. They work very well and shove out lots of light, but I have one reservation. When they do go wrong, and you have to strip them down, that is when you see the lesser quality of production when compared to a Petromax. Also, the chrome plating is very thin; make sure that you dry it off and wipe with a bit of WD40 if it ever gets caught in the rain. But for the money, a good bright lamp, if somewhat greedy on fuel. Steve.

Hi Frosty and gz with your bargain.
A little tip of chinese lamps have a remarkable good quality. I knocked over a LightBrand my self some time ago and it is better build than most of the lamps. Thick solid brass, nice chrome-job and the innertop was green-enamel, so when lighting goes wrong, you can just was the innertop and it looks like new. The pump is rubbish though, but all in all a lamp in topquality and steady-burning. So dont be scared of chinese lamps - just use common sense. 29,95 Didnt his lead-dog bark at you ;O)

Some of them like the Major Surplus lamp are made of steel though so not of the same quality as a brass lamp.

I for one living in Hawaii preffer the brass to the steel.
