Well, They were only avaialble to the Ex-Navy collectors :^o . There was the red one for the port side  and a green one for the starboard side  . I even have the white vesrsion for the stern lamp  ! So have got the full set   . I am of course only joking  , but I expect that very soon someone will pop up and tell me that I am right this time! Unlikely though   . Steve.

The Navy you say, Steve - that would explain it, then. I got mine from a very accommodating young lady I met down by the docks...

Ah, I'm in Amsterdam in the next couple of months maybe someone there could help me...

Joking aside, it would be useful if I could get hold of one as I could use it whilst observing. As most will know red light helps preserve your night vision and I'm really not a fan of the red led lights they sell. The warmth from a Tilley would be quite welcome too!

I have never seen or heard of a red Tilley globe. I have seen a few that have been stained red from long exposure to flame but never one made red as new. Hard to tell from the image but that looks like an early globe with a deep lower dish from around 1946 to 1952 ish. Could be a special made for some Tilley contract but as far as I know it was never catalogued like that so not available to the general public. ::Neil::

Are there possibly any red globes for other lamps that might fit a Tilley?

I'm guessing it might be a bit expensive to get one made...

Glad you asked that - I was just about to.

David (Skeeves) - did your lamp come with that globe?

You can get glass colouring kits i.e. to produce "stained glass" - perhaps that's what was used in this case...

Thanks podly, certainly a solution if I were to get a Coleman lamp...

Does anyone know if any of the Coleman globes are compatible with other lamps too?

David - any idea how it would stand up to being used on a lamp?

If you very much want a red Tilley glass lamp and I do  , You could try the glass staining kits that David has refered to  . Then you could also give us some feedback about how good the product is   . I bet that the military, who mainly used Bialaddin Lamps, had a red glass version to protect their night vision back at Field HQ, but I have not come across one yet. Go for it  and do some "original research" for your PHd in Lampology :D/ :D/ . Steve.

Red glasses for hurricane lamps are easy to find, i know they wont fit pressure lamps but for a cheap light, that may be the answer...

The red glass shown at Newark 2012 was sold by me at that event. I still have one but I'm hanging on to it. I bought mine several years ago at a steam rally of a guy who had a box full of them. Perhaps I should have bought more.

Does anyone know if the Coleman straight walled or rounded globe glass featured in the OCP website will fit a 500 cp petromax lantern?
My lantern globe: 110 mm diameter (measured from outside of globe) by 115 mm height.

An email to the site owner verifies that the Coleman globe will not fit a Petromax lantern.

    Linus,

I didn't check it, but have a look at: http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/2330

as I found, coleman 288 size is 108 x 114 so this one should fit:

I noticed JAFE Decorating are mentioned in that thread and I wonder if they are the suppliers for the coloured Coleman globes.. http://www.jafedecorating.com/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=71

I'm not sure if they'll ship to the UK or even consider doing read Tilley globes but it can't hurt to ask.

Shipping cost looks very high from JAFE - about 100$ for globe :(

I sent them an email to see if they would color my globe. Their shipping cost is not $100 (in the USA) unless you are going for next day air.

I asked whether any of their coloured Coleman globes would fit a Tilley X246B and the answer also came back no. I'm hoping they know this for a fact and that this isn't just a standard disclaimer used for any such question.

I have to now ask, how readily available are standard clear Tilley X246B globes in the USA... are there reliable US suppliers of replacements?

If I ask this company to quote for producing coloured Tilley globes I want to know that they can source them locally rather than incur two lots of trans Atlantic shipping costs and all the hassle that goes along with that.

They do and it isn't - I can tell you quite categorically that no Coleman globe will fit a Tilley X246B...
