I think I know which lamp your talking about and if for a second I thought I could get that price, I would go and take mine off the shelf right now and stick it on Ebay. I'll give people here a chance though, first offer of £500 or more and it's yours. ;) :D

Here's the Link for people who didn't see it.

I was confused too. Is it something special about this lamp, or is it just repainted and polished 300X ?

    No, just repainted and polished.

Some might say 'tarted up for an eBay sale to magpie-types...'

Did it even come in that colour?
It looked nice in blue - but if it is not origin then I hated it.

No, it didn't come in that colour. The correct colour was called, IIRC, Rapidal Grey - see Ian's book.

As it happens, I once refurbished someone's Vapalux 300 and resprayed it in more-or-less that colour which was a Citroen one from memory. As it happened he didn't like it and promptly resprayed it something else.

I've tried to have the paint matched at a local motor factors. The colour wasn't a problem - a BMW one was just about exact - but getting just the right degree of 'mattness' was. I didn't want it too shiny because the originals weren't, but he added too much matting agent the first time. I just haven't yet tried out his second attempt.

However, I think the grey 'Plastikote' enamel available at vast expense from the likes of B&Q is a decent enough match - but probably too glossy for me...

I think the sellers claim that he's 'Bringing history back to life' is somewhat erroneous too. I suspect it's the exact opposite. I doubt the new owner will want to 'spoil' his shiny new lantern by filling it with paraffin and lighting it.

Here in Germany we have a saying: "Paint a machine red or green and it will be holy to the german farmer."

It seems that "Polish and repaint a lamp and it will be the holy grail for (someone of your choice)" hits the nail on it's head.

Here in Britain we have a saying 'you can't polish a turd'
Though a 300 isn't , It does sometimes appear that way

I think lamps from newstate looks nice when polished and when the first stain comes I cry like a baby but in time the next marks and stains starts to give the lamp personality and those lamps signalling a rough life I think is a crime to remove. Its still possible to clean them with caution and keep the patina though. Its a delicate balance between spoiling a old lamp and make it look nice with respect of its age.
The state one recieves a lamp in is the state that tells how to restore it I think.
In my world nothing is more ugly, than a lamp polished and painted though it has bulges and scratches underneath that shows all the treating-history is gone, and customers.

    Mathew !
Next time you sign for a posting get rid of the pic of your two vase lamps ,there worthless !
Your bank manager would much rather see a tartan rug with two Vapalux lamps as your future image !

Oh well  The market has peaked and I missed it again ](*,) I was going to put this one on at starting price £499 especially as it is a nice shade of "Asiatic Chrysanthium Red" . Never mind, I'll just let the brass bits mellow to a dull yellow for a while Steve

Thanks chaps, glad I gave you all a smile. :D Might go for the tartan effect next time I list a lamp on Ebay, see if I can trade off his reputation. Don't forget to don the high viz jacket as well.

No Claus, The window paint is much older and it is only the paint that is holding the window frame in  . Must do something about that one day (when lamp and stove fettling allow time  ) Steve.

Well, I saw that but why should it make me smile? - just looks like two old Vapalux lanterns to me. I liked the VL1s better.

And what's this about bank managers, financial advisors, Littleborough/tartan paint effects and hi-viz jackets. It's all a bit surreal, really...

    Dave !
Its all about money and how to make it !

    Mathew !
Presentation goes along way and now you've got it ,stick with it ! Definately better appearance the vapalux lamps more on the level of the rest of us !

Who ever wants to know !
Mick left his house in Harrogate at 3 am this morning and joined the queue on the runway at swinderby about 5 am .
Gates opened at 8am for sellers and buyers ,now who in their right mind ,wrong mind or no mind at all would spend £40 on a sales pitch , on a monday morning , on a very open exposed runway selling oil and / or wick lamps with outer glass shades and chimneys whilst all day long there was a force eight gale blowing!
The back of my Kangoo van is the only shelter I had !!

I lasted till 3 pm and finally gave up and went home .

The things I do to make some money !!!!!.

    signed Knackered !
