Is there any way to get information about this 827's manufacturing date? I have heard that Petromax production in Germany ended in 1975 and quality dropped?
Mostly we need pictures to be able to date a Petromax. Some do have a date code marked in teh base but a great number do not and images of parts id the only way. ::Neil::
Ok, i decided to take that Petromax because it is complete and probably easier to get spareparts than Optimus. I post pictures later, i think this Petromax is quite new, maybe from 1970's.
Nice lamp I stored my Petromax globe for safe keeping, replaced with a low cost Coleman 288/214.. A 110mm x 116mm Schott Suprax globe may be the least expensive in Finland.. The globe as part of history is irreplaceable and should be protected imho. 4 digit date code may be found on bottom, 2 digit week/1 digit year/1 digit day of week, produced during the '60s.. The following links may help with a your Petromax research. A History of the Petromax Lantern and the Graetz Family STUGA-CABAÑA starklicht.com In den 1960er Jahren wurden mindestens 80 % der Lampen exportiert. Pressure Lamps International Lampen-Fabrik Ehrich and Graetz OHG etc.
When i dismantled petromax i noticed that there is some "dirt" inside of fuel tank. Should i worry about it? Is there some good way to flush it away?
Triplapost... sorry There is a three digit serial number in my petromax 379 Is this non Germany made latern?
From the looks of your lantern I would think it's a little young to be German built, but possibly built in Portugal. It's early enough that the quality should match the Hipolito you just finished; I've got the same model lantern and you've got no quality issues to worry about. There is usually residue left in them after they are emptied and stored. That will wash out pretty easy and you'll be good to go. As far as the glass, it looks original to the lantern and the Petromax name on a globe is hard to find, at least it is in the US; so if you will run it a lot you might want to run a "user" globe. Just to insure the history of the old piece of glass.
I though also that it is quite new lantern. Yes this is very similar with that hipolito. Yes, i decided to save that glass because i am going to use this lamp more than just few times in year I ordered new "petromax" glass, but new model has painted black Petromax text on it.
Can someone help me? I just finished rebuild of my petromax, but i cant get it to burn correctly. I cant get whole mantle to glow, just some parts of it. Mantle has also little flame around it. Pressure is ok, lantern doesn't leak, mantle is ok. Where is problem?
Hi Pertsa, a picture tells more than a 1000 words! Anyway, by what you describe I guess part of the mantle is black? And not all fuel is burned inside the mantle (burns on the outside). This might mean the mixture is to rich. Have you checked the distance from the jet to the mixing tube? Also, have you tried the lantern with a jet you're sure of to be OK? What I often do is try the lantern without mantle, you should get nice bleu flamelettes at the burner. Some other, more knowledgeable members will give more advice, but do try to post a photo showing the problem. Best regards, Wim
I post pic soon. No i didn't tested lamp without mantle What distance should be between jet and mix tube?
That is a very fine lamp you got there Pertsa. Looks brandnew. Is it a 500 cp? 829? Good you got it going. Claus C
Thank you! Not real vintage sadly, but yes Boy Scout stuff Montana peak is new name to me, i have used to know it as "Campaign hat".
I've read that the style / design of the hat, with it's high crown and four indentations, was originally called Montana Peak. It was popular in the American West, and among outdoorsmen around the turn of the 20th Century. It was adopted by the US Army and Marine Corps, and Baden Powell of the Boy Scouts, in the first decade of the century, and was standard issue head gear for the US military until early 1942, when it was replaced by the cloth "Overseas Cap", which folded flat and took up much less space. Currently, it is still standard issue for Army and Marine drill instructors, US National Park Service Rangers, Canadian Mounted Police and many US state and local police agencies. I think it is still part of the uniform for the Boy Scouts, but is not too common.
I have one little problem with petromax, when i has been lit up about 30 min, light starts to blink and every other blink there is little flame around mantle. What is problem, lantern has enough fuel and pressure -Pekko
That sounds like it is not running hot enough. You don't normally get such problems with Preston loop generators but perhaps a slightly bigger mantle is wanted. ::Neil::
I have now 200-300 cp matle... I have one 350-450...should i try that after cleaning needle and nozzle.
