Got an old beat-up Tilley R1a bowl heater, not pretty, but saw no reason why it should not be a "worker". Everything fettled OK , but no mantle to put in it, and not worth paying out for a new mantle. So; I had two part burnt out mantles where I could save two halves. Stitched them together with four bits of SS wire (Homeward Bounders" we would call the stitches in the Navy). Lo and behold, the thing works fine! It will do as a workshop heater. Steve.
