Hi, did a quick search could not see this anywhere, just coming to the end of putting a 310 together, how does the mantle fix to the lamp? does it affix to the vapuriser just under the burner one end and at the other end affix to the burner where the recess bit is under the 3 air tubes? thanks
Hi Cider and welcome to the group. You have the basic idea correct. Below are the instructions from an older mantle package. Dan
Thanks Dan,. that makes me confused now, I got the top part correct then but not sure about the bottom part, unscrew S, why would you need to do that? or am i looking at it wrong because I don't have the hood on ... or is it that instead o being below S the mantle should be attached to S just above where S gets smaller am I making this hard or what
Like this so bottom is attached to S at bottom just above the larger part but not attached to the vapouriser tube PS.. Massive sorry just noticed the note on the side------> about no image hosting from photobucket.. SORRY it wont happen again
The recommendation to remove the support tube is so you can slip the mantle bottom part over the top of the tube. The mantle will then "drape" properly forming that nice mushroom shape. You could of course not remove the tube and just pull the mantle over the bottom of the tube. It may work just fine, but will not hang as was originally desired. I don't know if it makes a difference in the actual performance, but there is a preferred way of doing this as shown in the instructions. There is always a small risk in trying to remove the tube especially if it's stuck in there, but they do come out. Dan
That looks correct how you've done it. The mantle does look a bit on the small side. Is that the correct one for the 310? Dan
V42 would be the one. Who is the maker (or where did you buy) that mantle? Now for the pictures of the lamp running! Dan
Thats Dans packet not mine sorry i went to add a picture but i cant get it correct size only allowed 90kb file? not allowed to add a link to ebay you have to screen grab and when i get file correct size its tiny and cant add photo to photobucket as that's not allowed either haha im worried of breaking the rules and getting banned from the start they from ebay seller called hootflipflopandfly and they were about £8 for 2 posted in clear packets hope that helps
Try the Image Optimiser on this forum, it works well. I also use free image software called IrfanView, among many things it can do is resize/resample your jpegs and save to specified file sizes. Once you get the hang of it, it's really easy to add pictures to your posts. For parts, in the future also check Base Camp. Mike's a great guy and knows his stuff. Dan
Thanks Dan, was going to get some parts from him but was not sure who he was with the ordering of parts etc.. but will from here on i suspect then
Yes, I know - I'd assumed yours was in the packet also, otherwise how would you have known what lantern it was for. Anyway, I see you got them from 'Hootflipflopandfart' in a clear packet. I'm not sure what he's up to there (he may have had them made to order or bought in bulk from the Far East), but he's pretty reliable so odds are, they'll be OK. Unlike Tilley, you can't easily (or at all, perhaps) fit the bottom end of the mantle straight over the large step at the bottom of the burner spigot (=mantle support) so you have to unscrew it and fit the mantle as per the instructions. This not only looks far nicer but, as Dan has said, it helps the mantle inflate better when you first pressurise the lantern. I'd go so far as to say it's the best way with Tilley lanterns, too... Regarding loading images, once you've cropped the image and got it how you want, what you need to do then is save it somewhere on your 'puter. As you do that, a dialogue box should come up asking you what picture quality you want to save it as. Drop that to around 25% which reduces the file-size massively but doesn't, in fact, reduce the picture quality on a monitor. Also drop the resolution to no more than 72dpi - again, there's no point in any more when viewed on a monitor Hope that helps... By the way, the Bialaddin 310 is a fine lantern and should outlive you and your kids. If it's got the correct round-shouldered globe, so much the better but don't go breaking it - they're getting scarce and expensive. The other, later, angled-shouldered globe fits and works fine but it just ain't 'right'...
Thanks David... I think it is original same as this one http://www.classicpressurelamps.com/forum/gallery/13/1293803061-bialaddin_310_opt.jpg was my grandads then my dads after years of storage now mine and im bringing it back to good working order and a clean up,, think i have a second one to
Very nice lantern and it is the correct globe. Personally, I'd retire that one to keep it looking good and get a cheap 'user' lantern from eBay or somewhere - there are loads to be had just now. Stick with Bialaddin or Vapalux and you won't go far wrong, although I expect Christer will be along in a minute telling us they're dim...
haha.. all I can remember about them is its sound and sitting on a beach at 3am as a boy fishing off chesel beach.. i really don't want to retire this one, it will have very little use but im doing this to be a working lamp for now and then, if I have a second ill retire that one or better still retire the family one and use the other one now n then
whilst we have come this far, i no the approx year of the 310 is there a way of tracking the exact year from the numbers on the plate?
I assume you mean hootflipflopandfly, in which case I can't recommend them highly enough. My last order, coincidentally Bialaddin mantles, arrived in less than 24 hours... Excellent seller Those Bialaddin mantles he sells do burn with a much yellower light and are slightly less bright than the Tilley mantles he also sells but they work fine. At first I thought the difference might be the lamp but I've now tried it on several lamps and they all perform similarly with those mantles.
yes think I meant him check when I get home. I copy and pasted the user name so don't no why it changed fly to fart haha???? ... but oh .. I wanted a nice bright white rather than a warm yellow.. not so good ill see how they look may find different ones
Ok i may as well keep on the subject here, but this is a noob alert question how much meth do i add to the wick for lighting, I have an 18mm pipette and how do i burn off the mantle first time, ive seen people put a match to theirs etc, but how do i do this on the 310? as i cant take the top off can i as when i fit it back on the mantle will prod just fall to dust????
Don't bother with using the pipette to measure it. The manufacturer made the spirit cup the size it is for a very good reason - fill it up. Read the instructions on the mantle packet pictured above. Fit the mantle and the first time you prime the lantern the mantle will be burned off at the same time...
