Finished one of my 2 bialaddin 310's today fitted the Mantle and lit the thing up with no issues at all, hissing away lovely should have the other done by monday then ill move onto the Fl6.. Q though, what causes holes in matles.. after i let it run for 35 mins i shut it down, I put the pricker up and then let the pressure out, hope that correct, and I noticed a hole in the mantle its only small though nothing to notice to much but it is there so wondered what the cause of that was, its near the top I'll do a proper vid soon this is just a quick show video from the first light up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BBB_GYTKSY
Hi,l would say not to turn it off with the jet cleaner knob just let the pressure out with the air screw. The mantle might have already been faulty or you might have accidently touched it with a match or lighter or maybe your hands were contaminated by something before handling the mantle.
Ok thanks, was worried about just releasing pressure encase I went up in a fireball but now i no its ok Prob contamination then i had messy hands from other work,, only small hole wont cause issue will it?
Nah paraffin vapour doesn't burn like that only the more volatile fuels like petrol which you shouldn't use in a Bialaddin anyway.
Hole in the mantle is not good, you might not notice it much in daylight but when it gets dark you might notice a little jet coming from the hole and if it's directed towards the glass it could overheat in that spot and crack the glass.
A small hole in the mantle, after first lighting may be due to over-pressuring it after burn-in or, and I think that this is most likely, poor quality mantles. IMO it is very difficult to buy good quality mantles these days. Steve.
I just let the pressure out with the pressure release screw... When putting away I loosen the cap too just to make sure no pressure can build up if the temperature warms up. On the Bialaddin I only use the control for clearing the jet.
Good idea loosening the cap, in that hot weather we had, my lamp that was in direct sunlight spewed out a fair bit of Kero.
I use Tilley 164X mantles on all my Bialladin/Vapalux lamps and they work fine. I get them direct from Tilley via their website at £1.35 each. Terry
Biladdin lamps do not have a valve control. The control is only a pricker operator and should not be used to turn the lamp off. In fact a simple alchol preheated kero lamp does not need a valve. ::Neil::
Yes one of my bialaddins is incontinent after turning off,,and all the others are ok,its definitely weeping from the end of the vaporiser,i have to leave it outside on an old bit of newspaper, once its had a couple of hours to do its thing then it stays dry..leaving the vent screw open doesn't help and it still leaks
Yes, I've noticed that myself - not so much with lanterns but more so with stoves, to the extent that now, I never leave any of them with fuel in. With some, leaving the pressure release open and the filler cap loose made not a hap'orth of difference - they still leaked kero from the nipple when things warmed up. My Optimus 22 is probably the worst offender...
Thanks Every one to their reply's and tips,, I will have a look at other mantle options as well as the tilley one mentioned i just bought mine off the bay to get me going on my first fettle and they work out at £4 a pop.. I lit the lamp last night took some pics n video ill try get on here "wish photo buck was allowed" when i lit the lamp i was like oooh pretty
Why? The system we have already is simple to use and far better because the images will remain long after your photobucket account has been closed or deleted. To save you looking, just click [url=http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/993 Be sure to follow all the instructions, especially those in red text. Hope that helps...
thanks expat .. Ok ill try this see if i can get a pic on here .. started like this Then ended up here and here is a video i done of it, pre burn, conditioning the mantel, then it lit in garden in the evening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qTonJlxAIQ
I do like these. Best looking of all the Bialaddin models. It will look even better if you can find the right globe for it. They are getting hard to find now but they do still appear so keep looking. ::Neil::
No even wide open it still seems to "reseal" under it's own weight sometimes. As I said earlier once I have released the pressure I loosen the filler cap too and this seems to solve the issue... Just don't forget before picking it up and turning it on it's side Cider - much as I like the look of polished brass I think in this case I probably would have found a match for the paint and resprayed it.
yes possibly but I can re paint at anytime when funds are more healthy.. I will be using it more than display... I thought this was the original globe I have to of these lamps both are the same and one was baught new by grand father and I doubt he ever changed it
No when that lamp was sold Bialaddin used the same round shouldered globe for both this lantern and the table lamps. ::Neil::
so which one is the "original" do you have a pic? So they released this lamp with this hood but its not the correct one is this rite?
Check out the link below, it shows the Bialaddin 310 with it's proper globe and the table lamps are also shown fitted with the same globe. The globe which is fitted to your 310, is actually for the Bialaddin 315 and 320 lanterns, Jeff. http://www.classicpressurelamps.com/forum/showgallery.php?fid/46/puid//fp/2/
This link shows paperwork for the Bialaddin lanterns, but that part of this website is only open to subcribers, Jeff. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/1462
I feel I actually cannot see the difference from mine to that link good job im only doing this for fun for myself not as a collector
Interesting paperwork that, Jeff. I'd always assumed that the 300 and 305 were the same lantern apart from minor differences - unless I'm missing something really obvious, in which case, I'm blaming memory loss due to old age and/or these varifocals. But according to pages 1 and 3, the 305 is lighter by over 12 ounces compared to the 300. So where did that weight go? Probably because we're saying "globe" and you're looking at "hood"...
yes my mistake, thank you david, think i got the idea now. mine steps down at the base where the 310 just rounds off at the base of the globe is that it.. yup so hold the phone I have had a look at my lamps,,my Grandads one has the correct globe and the second 310 i picked up has a 315 globe i see the diff now im going to post the pic i took
Ok so here is the pics of the 2x 310's if im correct the one on the left is my grandads which i was sure to be unchanged so this one has the correct globe? the one on the right is the 310 i picked up from the bay, this has a globe from a 315? which has like a step to it..? easy to spot when u no what to look at haha
