I thought I would give this topic it's own thread as it has so far been an off topic discussion in another thread...

The main aim of Tilley x246B day is basically to gather and light as many X246Bs as possible to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the X246B.

A rather ambitious 246 has been proposed and is the Holy Grail. So we need as many X246B owners as possible to come forward and attend our world record X246B lighting attempt... Those that can't physically attend could light still light an X246B or two on the day and post a picture  Ideally though we would like as many people as possible there on the day with their X246Bs..

I have three to bring so far, never now how many more may come my way before Newark. I think David is right in aiming for 50 lamps in a 50 shape! We could get to 50.

How do we know whos lamps is whos at the end?

The only ones I entertain are my London-Transport modified handlamp ones.
But are they still an X246B or would they have to sit quietly in their own corner?

If I can make it down with them I would love to, what a gathering!

Good question... they do all look the same  I guess we'll have to get some little tie on labels or the like.

I certainly think 50 is achievable, with just me, Steve and Yourself we already have 14...

    Alec hasn't mentioned how many, 200? [-o<

This is a very excellent endeavor. We do these mass lightings at our Coleman Conventions all the time.

The picture below is one from the 2012 Coleman Convention at Lake George, near the end of the event. We also had one when we arrived, lighting up the perimeter of the parking lot. It never takes much of a reason, and it's a great way to get everyone together.

    Hello All,
I thought I would jump into this thread as I have been away from the site for most of the Summer due to work and other projects, but I am back and the X246B light-up is quite appropriate.

I just returned from visiting relatives in Ireland and managed to find a nearly unused 246B at a car boot sale while I was there. (first and only in my collection) Seeing as it was made in Belfast, I thought it would be an appropriate souvenir, and I managed to get it back in my luggage without TSA security hassles. [-o<

In any case, I hope I can bring it back to life in time for the light-up with just some new seals and a mantle...... and that the reason for it's non-use was not a dodgy control cock or other quality issue!

Best Regards and I am glad to be back!

    Doug E.

Sorry guys but you are on your own here. We may make Newark but if so I will not be wasting any space loading a dozen or so pieces of junk instead of an interesting and variable display. I have never taken an X246B to any display because they are so common and I have a great number of far more interesting lamps. Make it Pork Pies and perhaps but Bs? No way. ::Neil::

Yeah, I'm more-or-less the same. I'll even go so far as to take maybe four gold chrome-topped ones as my contribution to the '50' but that's about it - and I'll quite happily not take three of them back home with me... :D/

...and when it comes to pork pies, make mine Dickinson & Morris will you, Neil...

X246 pork-pies will be 2016 - and we'll need 70 of them. Now we should manage that, surely :p

Four would be good... we only need eight or nine more people to do that and we would easily guarantee to make the 50....

I'm happy to bring as many as I can because I don't have any more interesting lamps

    I can manage one...

I think this may run into trouble when it comes to VL1s... :-#

With all due respect, I think you're missing the point. What we're planning to celebrate is the 50th anniversary of the Tilley X246B, first produced in 1964 i.e. its Golden Jubilee. Hence 50 gold X246Bs arranged in the shape of '50'.

At every Newark meeting, there are probably hundreds of various lanterns lit - it's the norm. What you're suggesting is no different from that and therefore hardly a celebration of a special event...

Hmm, the centenary of the VL1 will be around 2022/3 at a guess and, of course, we'll need one hundred. Still, plenty of time to collect a few more, eh?

Seriously, I don't know of any collector with more than two and I wonder if there are even 100 left in the world. My memory's crap but I don't recall ever seeing one on display...

I'm afraid some/most of mine may not be gold... I think we may have to play that one by ear.

I've met someone with 3, Old gold, saxe blue and olive green. I saw the pictures to prove it. Also I've seen one old gold on display down at Dorset a couple of years ago. If I saw another I'd try to buy it. [-o<

No, I think for the '50', they must be gold.

The red and/or bronze ones etc. can contribute to the 246 attempt, I think... 8)

I'm thinking we should perhaps keep a running total of the number pledged... I think it's 17 plus I think David said 4, so up to 21.

I find the best place to keep them is under a jack of a JCB!

Non committal on my attendance as it depends on shifts but I would like to be there.

I dunno, next year will mostly be about being in Normandy the first week in June.

It would be fun to do though.

OK, the X246B is nobody's favourite, but does any other lamp come close to being almost unchanged over 50 years?

Give the poor (and it is poor) thing some credit.

Well, my first and only brand spanking new Tilley was an X246B - Gold coloured tank - purchased a little while before 1968 for 5gns (guinea - £1/1s) and it's still going strong.

Petromax? Me thinks they have a far longer production history for a single type than most (if not all) other makes. The only mayor change (pre WW2) was the addition of a pre-heat torch. Only other competitor I can think of is Coleman.

    Best regards,

    Wim

Sorry to harp back to the topic of lighting up to commemorate various landmarks in the Tilley production world - there must be 100 VL1s around the world but doubt that anyone would risk gathering them all together (what a sight that would be though!). If I'm still around when it comes to the centenary of the FS1 bags I the right to light the first.

Is this a case of familiarity breeds contempt?

The Tilley is not rare or very old but it was sold in thousands and for many of us our first pressure lamps.

Its robust, easily fixed and simple. What more can you ask.

Lets here it for the 246B!

    249 Days to go.
