Hello, My name is John and I'm a workaholic, so much so that when I do get a vacation I can virtually disappear off the map. Luckily for me I have friends who know me pretty well. On one of these vacation excursions a member of the Coleman Collectors Forum decided to sell a Coleman parts bin in the classifieds. Here's the picture he posted. Did you see the lamp? So I'm driving home after being at the beach for the better part of a week and having no access to the forum at all. I get a phone call asking if I'm interested in the Tilley hanging lamp that was posted on the forum. My answer is of course "YES, what lamp?" A picture was sent to me and a price was decided on shortly after. Bruce was kind enough to pick up the lamp that evening and keep it safe and sound for two solid months before our bi-annual meeting, at which time he drove about four hours to be there. Once I returned from vacation I saw that I had no less than three PM's and two e-mails from different friends on the the forum who were notifying me about this lamp. With friends like the the missus will never get her side of the garage back. So the day finally arrived and I met my new lamp. A nice coat of paint, correct globe and maybe a control cock and she'll be good to go.
Hello Jeff, I'm not sure of the globes manufacture, I thought it might be a Humphreys but the samples I can find online are a bit shorter and not so rounded. It fit the burner well enough and actually looked pretty good on the lamp but I wasn't sure if it could take the heat so I replaced it with a more suitable globe. I originally wrote this post as a story describing how the lamp had came to me but since it's been moved to discussion, let's discuss. Here's the control cock that came with the lamp. I'm not a fan of the plastic push on knob so I'm thinking about changing to an older version with a real knob on it. I had some time on Sunday so out came the paint. I see now why the center stripe on the tank is usually painted or polished. It's a bit of a pain to get pressure into but it'll be getting dark soon.
Wants a pale green band around the middle. It's about the same green as used for Coleman mid '30s lanterns. ::Neil::
On the other hand, they're advertised on eBay UK at the moment - not so pricey. I also have a few I can spare...
Hello John, that globe does look to large to be a Humphreys, unless they made different sizes of course. In my opinion that control cock is from the 1960's and it's better than the modern ones, but a period control cock would be better in every way. The lamp looks much better now! A bicycle pump which has a flexible connection is used to pressurise that lamp, Jeff.
now I see the correct cock and globe on Neil's lamp in the gallery. I guess I should actually read the posts instead of just looking at the pictures Yes, it is wanting for a green band, it really brings out the shape of the tank and the color is beginning to grow on me. I'll have to get to work that.
