What is this lantern?

Hello, i saw this lamp in old farm's shed. I might be for sale but i would like to know what it is. I tried to find similar lantern from Reference gallery but i couldn't find any. I was little hurry when i noticed that lamp so i have just one picture and i remember that there was just text: Made in Britain and something about patent.

I am sure some of the experts here will correct me but I think you have a Bialaddin 300X fount, control cock, vapouriser, burner and hood with what appears to be a modified Tilley X246B cage and glass.

+1 On that, just checked and a Tilley 171 glass will fit in the hood of a Bialaddin...

 

My guess is a Bialaddin 300X modified to take a 315 or 310 Bialaddin or a 246 Tilley globe

Once it has been fettled it will probably work, but it would also be useful for spares, Jeff.

 

Assuming it's properly fettled I can't see why it wouldn't work, Jeff - the working parts appear to be all Bialaddin and it's only the ancillary parts (globe and cage) that are Tilley.

I'm not sure why anybody would do that, unless the Bialaddin globe broke and a replacement wasn't obtainable but a Tilley one was.

 

Hello David, yes, they are all Bialaddin and your guess about why the conversion was done is probably correct.

Perhaps someone here will have a spare cage and a glass, Jeff.

 

I'd keep it as it is an an interesting lamp,,,in the pre-internet times you couldn't find out who the parts suppliers were and bodges had to be made to keep a lamp running,,,bit like how the Cubans manage to keep vehicles running after castro's revolution.

I'd hold onto it until enough bits to turned up to make a complete lamp.

Well, I'd never heard of Homelux and, even now, beyond they're Finnish, I'm none the wiser.

I'd assumed the globe cage was the bottom part of the original Bialaddin article with a Tilley X246B cage minus the bottom circle attached to it. But I've got to say, the Tilley globe (if it is Tilley) looks rather 'uncomfortable' in there.

One presumes the original globe cage height was preserved when the replacement was fabricated. Otherwise, the position of the jet relative to the air intakes may be out of specification and thereby the mixture compromised.

If the lantern is for sale, and cheap, it may be worth taking the risk...

 

If the glass is intact then it's worth a tenner, (£10) Jeff.

 

Well so long as it is not expensive then yes. It will be safe to run, after the normal pressure test of course, but the tank and burner bits are all Bialaddin so it should run OK. ::Neil::
