I have found an old kerosene lamp with a flat wick set a semicircle. The lamp haven't been used in 20 or 30 years so the wick is all hardened and it is stuck in the burner. Does anyone have a recommendation for a solvent that can be used to "soften" the wick so it can be removed . White Spirit (mineral spirit) perhaps? Dan
Hi Dan, try Kero first,let it soak for a few days, the problem can be rust if the holder is steel, then the wick can become rusted to the steel,its a pick it apart job ,I've even used a small drill or a scalpel to cut the wick apart being carefull not to touch the holder, some of the stronger chemicals that can help dissolve the wick will also damage the plating of the burner.
Thanks for the tip 'norf', I will try kerosene first. Strangely, there was some oily residue left at the bottom of the container, so the wick wasn't completely dry at the end.
