Can anyone tell me which mantles will fit a Veritas Nomad gas lantern? I have had no success from the search facility. Not a classic lamp I know, but found one and would like to have it working. It uses a butane cartridge; the piercible type. Steve.
Well, Steve, this is an interesting question. I'm about halfway sorting through my mantle box (there's hundreds in there) and I'm not much nearer to finding the answer. The best I can come up with so far is that it might be the Veritas No. 3894 which is a single end, tie-on type suitable for:- "Veritas Chieftain Pandora Clansman Tilley Go Light Toplight Calor Primus Sievert Lanterns 176 Cadac and Valor Veritas Gas Lamps" The lack of any punctuation is most unhelpful Given that mantles are pretty generic, I'd be guessing and say that any 100-200cp single-tie mantle that physically fits the burner would be OK. It makes me wonder, though, if we haven't missed an opportunity in the mantle gallery by not listing the various lamps and lanterns the various types were made for. I'll keep raking through my box...
Belay that, Steve - it's a Veritas No. M2557 mantle you require. I'd already found it in the box but because the packet is so small, the mantle obscured what lanterns it was intended for:- "Nomad.Camping Gaz.Jetgaz.Primus/ Calor.Taymar.Weekend.Optimus" (dodgy punctuation this time - very faint dots at half height between the words) Anyway, it's a 100cp slip-on type, apparently single-ended and around 60mm in diameter flat in the packet. Hope that helps... P.S. ...and just what do you mean by "not a classic lamp" - tut!
Hi David, Thanks for that info However, I cannot see how the mantle can be "single ended" as it has to slide half way down the gas tube where it sits on two ridges so as to cover the perforated section of the gas tube where the gas emits. I'll see what's I can find on the internet. Cheers - Steve.
Yes, Steve - note the word 'apparently' in my second reply! Just for you I've opened the packet (wouldn't do it for everybody, mind) and I can now see it's sort of double-ended. As originally seen through the packet - one small hole with no other visible. However, take it out of the packet and turn it over:- Thus double-ended with different sized holes - the larger is 6-7mm and the smaller is 3-4mm. IIRC, the larger hole is the lower one and the smaller one just sits on what is effectively a spike at the top of the perforated gas supply tube which was why I said 'sort of double-ended'. Hope that helps...
Now if you can get him to post it to you as well Steve, you'll be well on your way. Surely Mr Shouksmith has no use for gas mantles.
Au contraire, Matthew - I'm quite partial to the various gassie offerings we've had from certain manufacturers over the years. If it's got Tilley or Dexagas/Calordex on it I probably want it. Veritas, less so, but possibly still worth having. No, it's that damned wickie-crap that I can't be doin' with...
Thanks David, that explains everything. Put it back in the wrapper now and back in your mantle collection box! Cheers - Steve.
Not with any noticeable energy, Matthew! I found another mantle in my box - this time with fitting instructions:- The bugger is I gave a handful of these to the bloke next door a couple of years back. Whatever, either mantle's there for you, Steve, if you like...
It's very unlikely I'll be there this year, Steve... Edit: I've just noticed that there's also one of these mantles listed on a well-known auction site if that suits you better...
