Are the plated fount's on Coleman lanterns Nickel or Chromium plated? Model concerned is a 83 Canadian 335.
Oh, I had assumed that my 339 was chrome plate because of the way it had flaked... I thought Nickle was more inclined to just wear through than come off in flakes.
The reason that I am not sure is the fact that the Fount is so pitted that I have tried "reverse electrolysis" to remove the plating, with no result at all. I have removed Nickel before on other objects this way, clean/polish rust pits and then re-plate. Then "polish like hell". Fell for the Chrome/Nickel problem before. I have to say that I have not heard that Coleman used Chrome at any time.
I find it difficult to distinguish between chromium and nickel plating but nickel is supposed to have a blue-ish hue to it...
He who knows most things,"me Dad" said the same thing, as to the blue hue of Nickel. Sadly for me the only thing that had a blue look was the air, when I got to work this morning!!!
Hi Gang! Coleman used Nickel to plate their lanterns. I don't know about some of the newer ones made in the last 10-12 years, they could have been made of something else. Any of the newer ones were made to make a BUCK and that's fine, no one has to buy them. I prefer the older ones. Ain't this a great hobby? You get to name your own poison!
Hope this works. On the left is a later AGM model 100 in chrome. On the right is an early AGM model 100 in nickel. Hopefully you can see that actually the chrome is blue, while the nickel is yellow. Very best wishes Dan MacPherson
