Here we have one MEWA manufactured (HASAG ) 351L, One can only guess why the used the HASAG logo on the fount, maybe because it was a well known brand , however this lantern was manufactured by MEWA during the DDR period, most details on this 351L are identical with the 351L that was manufactured by HASAG before the war, but there are differences such as, smaller prehating cup, just a hole instead of an hole with an hatch in the bottom of the glasstand, to name a few. This type of lantern was also manufactured with a spiral vapouriser, Probably simmilar to the 351A version ( kero only ) the 351L could be run and prehated with gasoline, aswell as kerosene.
I believe they made these with the HASAG brand for export to the West. As I understand it the ideology might have been vastly different but business was business and they needed the Western Currency so exports were important. HASAG branded because it was a known brand that buyers knew and trusted. ::Neil::
This Hasag/Mewa lamp is the type of lamp you most often will find on sales here in Finland. And I agree, they work well and the glass globe is a pain to get . I personally have two at this moment, both with a glass globe that is intact (with the hole on the side as it should be).
Hi Anders ! This one i purchased from a collector in Finland, aswell as the HASAG 51A, Finland seems to be the place to find both HASAG's and MEWA lanterns. I also have two of those East Germany Glasscylinders. Frederik
Hi Anders ! thats' correct , I was searcing to find a new fount for my HASAG 351L , and when Petri helped me... i ended up with all these lanterns, Great Guy ! Frederik
Yes he is. We talk with each other every now and then. He lives on the east side of Finland and has found lots of nice lamps there. The Valmet 300 I have, I bought from him also, as well as the Homelux lamp (still no picture of it here).
Hello Anders, I see that you reside in Finland, have any Kitson lamps turned up there? The reason why I ask, is that Kitson did a lot of business with Czarist Russia, so it's possible that some of the lamps found their way to Finland. The Russian revolution hit Kitson hard financially, as the new regime would not pay the outstanding bills, this was the case for many western companies.
No I have never seen a Kitson "in flesh". Finland also traded with Russia and we never got even, they allways got more from us than we got from them. A lot of companies trusted on the Russian market, but when they had sent big shiploads over the border, they sometimes didn't get any money. I guess it is different nowadays.
No it's not... i work for a big mining company, we never ship anything to the former eastern block, before getting payed. Fred,
