Just to add further confusion to the pot, with regard to the new title of the Lions in Rugby union, which was supposed to be the British Isles in a geographic sense. No politics! Now is the British and Irish Lions? Soon to be the British Scotland and Irish Lions. How long will the Name become in the future. Will soon be to long to fit on a billboard!

Just to add o the discussion and I'm only going on memory.
Back in the 60's, The UK Parliament changed the law that gave automatic British citizenship to us in "The Colonies".
Us Colonials were no longer regarded as "British", and our passports were changed to reflect this.
I think the law was changed because a lot of people had immigrated to the UK on the basis that they were British citizens, and the Govt of the day thought they could be "undesirables" and not fit into UK society in the traditional British manner.

    RBTL.
