Hello one and all. Does anyone know if there should be some graphite string or some other sort of packing (and how much) in the cleaning needle control? The burner unit is 5.5" / 14cm. high and a 350cp cleaning needle is a nice fit in the jet. Thanks in advance, Henry.

Thanks Michel, I found the site and I too found that it is in maintenance. The drawings you posted are helpful and I will try with some Teflon tape twisted into string. If that does not work, I'll order some graphite string. Henry.

Twisted PTFE is OK but it does tend to extrude and requires constant adjustment. The technical term is "stress relaxation and extrusion". I keep the asbestos off-cuts from mantle ties and coat them in high temperature anti-seizing compound, nickel based is preferred, and use these to make "valve twist". If desperate you can use abrasive paper to make graphite dust from a 2B pencil or a carpenters pencil (soft)and rub this into the using disposable gloves. Both work well but the former is best

The essence of the patent is a flexible disc (membrane elastique) in French. The membrane (f) is retained by a nut (h) (tampon) in the patent. Sealing is required between the disc and housing and the disc and lever (e) This appears to be a threaded arrangement. For the appropriate gasket sealing visit www.garlock.com The patent nominates steel (spring steel?) as the membrane material. If this (f) has corroded beryllium copper is a better choice than steel. Hi Stu, I tried PTFE tape without success so ordered some 1/16" dia. graphite string from Maidstone Engineering Supplies, it arrived today so had a play this evening. Used all five feet and it still leaks but not as bad, I think I should have ordered the 1/8" dia. but too late now. Thanks for the link, I'll try some of that, the square section looks as if it'll be easier to deal with and being thicker, should be more effective. Henry.
Hi JTL, Thanks for the info. The spring steel disc is in good order with no rust or pitting. What the patent drawing does not show is that the rod goes through the disc at an angle - this is correct ! Thus, when the rod is turned, it (both ends) describes an arc. Therefor the end which locates in the needle carrier goes up and down. Because the rod is describing an arc, it needs some free space. The difficulty is placing the packing evenly around the top of a bell shaped hole. Packing the top side of the disc is easy. I guess I'll just have to keep practicing. Henry.
Hi Henry If I can get a copy of the patent PDF file that I can edit to select the text I will try and have it translated into English to better understand the intent of the patent. As no gland packing is shown in the patent I assumed there was none. Warwick
Hi Henry I have typed out some of the text of the Patent in Word and used Microsofts translator to translate the claims, page 2, and part of the description (50-55 page 1) I think the "say" in translation is a mistranslation. The word is not meant to be dit=say but an abbreviation of ditto meaning the same. Having said all this I am sure that there is no packing in the bell shaped chamber. There is a static mechanical seal between the lever and the diaphragm and the diaphragm and the housing/nut. The lever knob g is raised against the spring (elastic) tension of the diaphragm to clear the orifice of the nipple and is returned to a neutral position once released. If someone else can give an alternate description of the operation I would like to hear it especially if they are fluent in French and pressure lamps.
