I have just received a new washer kit for my Tilley. Embarrassingly I am not sure where all the washers go! I am left with 2 small o-rings and 2 solid flat washers. See pic. I suspect that 1 of the o-rings goes on the spindle for the stop cock. Are the others 'spares?!! I also have a problem in that I cannot withdraw the stopcock. I have unscrewed the collar but the shaft won't come out. I am reluctant to use force. What am I doing wrong? No wonder I am a clerk and not a technician!

Hi The shaft is not suppose to come out. The black knob will screw off, then you remove that nut piece on the shaft and insert one of the round o-rings and replace the nut piece you removed - but do not put it on too tight. That's the gland packing nut (probably got that wrong) that keeps the lantern from leaking when you move the black knob on the shaft to the on/off position. When you remove the black knob make sure you hold that shaft with pliers or something so it won't move when you remove the knob.
    Clear as mud, right?

Hi Nonzo the spindle can not be removed from the stop cock, what you need to do is turn the black nob anticlockwise to full open the spindle, and keep turning and the black knob will unscrew once this is removed you can then remove the gland collar.
place the two o rings on the spindle the screw the collar back on, and tighten and the screw the knob back on.
The two flat washers are for the pump and at the cock itself, on the cock at the bottom there is a round collar that has a wire mesh screen unscrew this and remove the brass jumper remove the old washer and replace with the new.
The other goes on the pump at the bottom of the pump unscrew the bottom to get at the brass jumper and spring this is the pump non return valve its basically the same as the cock valve

Hi, and the two solid flat washers, well, if you unscrew the filter at the bottom of the control cock carefully because it's spring loaded you'll find a small brass cup with a small solid flat washer - that's one, the other goes in a similar piece at the bottom end of the pump tube.

For some reason, Tilley specified two washers behind the gland nut - I've no idea why and I thought it was bad practice to use two seals or gaskets together. Anyway, you'll probably find that one works perfectly well and you'll have a spare.

Ross has replaced these washers with O-rings in his kits.

As far as the other two plain washers are concerned, the one in the pump non-return valve (NRV) is vital. The other in the bottom of the control cock is largely redundant and it probably won't make a happ'orth of difference if you don't bother to replace it. Then you'll have another spare...
