Here's a pair of Al15a's my parents picked up from a show they went to while I was at Ashover. 8) Looking a bit sorry for themselves so I thought i'd set about restoring them today. Made good progress so far, but i'm going to need another can of top coat to finish the other one. Hope you approve of what i've done (last two pics).
Nice nice lamps and great fettling Matthew, they are going to look stunning. Looking forward to end-result. Claus C
Thanks chaps, I love these two, they'll make good book ends as you can see in the second picture. To think that they cost less each than the can of paint from Halfords too.
Thanks Pete, the paint has gone on well, but it's a bit flat at the moment and I'm contemplating giving it a coat of laquer. Give it a bit more lustre and protect the paint a bit. Could be a bit new looking though.
you could always age the paint a bit matt just kick them round the garden for a while I think the paint looks better than the polished brass they was before tho will looks like new lamps when they are finished cheers pete
You could have always painted the second one the alternative livery, Matt; off-white and red. I don't know - VL1s, Optimus No.9 and now two AL15As for next to nowt. You can go off folk...
A few trips to Newark and they'll look old Pete. They definitely look better in paint, after reading the tin, it says metallic and pearlescent paints must be lacquered so I decided that's what I should do. I could still paint the other in white and red, it had crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure on a match so I bought another can of green. Don't go off me David, I'm still the same person no matter what I buy next, some people have the gift of selling, I've been burdened with the curse of finding and buying. If I try and sell it just doesn't work.
Hail David. Nice bit of restoration going on. I did over a steel founted Leacock 100 wall hanging pressure lantern recently. Originally it was enameled in a hideous gray. I scuffed it up, applied a good coat of primer, then a generous top coat of metallic , subdued gold used on brake calipers on show cars here in the states. It's tough paint that will handle about 800 degrees Fahrenheit. The paint imparts the feeling that the fount is brass, I'm happy with it now. Captain Mike in old Hampton, Virginia.
Haha if I get one David I'm just going to change my avatar to show it and see if you notice. Back to the lamps here, Are the plastic grips on the R55 heater the same as on these Al's? I'm missing half of one set and need a replacement.
