Hello all, I want to sell some stuff on ebay but to use ebay.com, worldwide I have to accept paypal, which I don't want. There are buyers who use paypal to claim they didn't got the bought item and then paypal will refund the money and I have nothing. That is why I don't want to use it. So how do you guys get around this ?
It works both ways - I've had several instances where I didn't receive the goods, and also a couple where the goods were not "as described". In all cases, I got my money back once I'd opened a claim with PayPal. I've never had a case where I sold something and the buyer claimed they'd not received it. I always get proof of posting, and for "high value" items I always send it "signed for". As I charge the buyer the correct postage for this, it's just a safety thing for both of us really. You could always insist on a bank transfer I guess. Personally, I wouldn't be prepared to deal with you if you wanted to be paid like that. After all, I'd have no protection!
I realize it works to two sides. But it also is a nice option for fraud. I get a box from you I sign for it and then I complain at paypal I got a rock in stead of a lantern. Then paypal first refund the money to me from your acount, which you can not block and we have a dispute. Using paypal give them full acces to your acount and in case of a dispute you also give them all the legal rights. For a buyer good protection but not always for the seller.
Here in Danmark it is possible to open the box at arrival at the postoffice and have a named postman confirming the contains. It can be a condition you can add under the trade and then it will work against fraud both ways. But a postoffice must be used, so no delivery to private adress. http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/uniques/product/industrial-london-brick-lamp There you are - next problem please Claus C
Yes - fraud is of course an option - I guess the only thing we can do is to take all the usual precautions (google the username for problems - check feedback - all that sort of thing). I did have one eBay seller who had clearly tried to hide that what he was selling wasn't quite what I received from him. He tried very hard indeed to resist repaying me. I merely sent pictures of the item to eBay / PayPal, who in turn compared them to his ad - I got my money back. On the whole, I've never had cause to complain about the way any of the disputes have been handled. Personally, I don't send anything outside UK - and ignore all the requests I get from Nigeria offering me vast amounts of money for a low value item :-) I did once sell an expensive pair of binoculars to a guy in America - that went insured and tracked - at his expense, and I'd checked that he was active in buying things like binoculars.. And I took a series of pictures of the item being packed, free of damage, all that sort of thing. All went well, I'm pleased to say. The only time I've ever been defrauded was buying a pair of new, brass candlesticks from a market stall in Ireland! The guy said the ones on the stall were for show and gave me a nicely wrapped box which, on opening when I got home, turned out to be of significantly lower quality! An old trick - and one I won't fall for again!
Well how does it continue ? Guy in Taiwan buys a lantern from me. Pays with paypal and I ship it, no problemo. After two days I check the track and trace code and WHAT ? Why is it going to Thailand ? Crap, looking on the receipt I got, I see two small letters printed TH. The person at the counter made a mistake while printing the bar code on the shipping transfer. And off coarse nobody looks at the printed address on the box, all is done by computer so scanning the code means it goes the wrong way. Now I have to wait till it arrives it Thailand where I hope somebody notices that Taiwan city isn't in Thailand and ship it back or maybe resend it to Taiwan. Meanwhile I also have an anxious buyer at the other end. To be continued...
Once I had to ship a lantern to Japan. Used the electronic registration, printed the label myself and put it onto the parcel. It went off, was checked by German customs and appeared again at customs in -Canada-! Asked the shipping company and was told that it was "misdirected" . It took 3 weeks to go out of customs, into customs again at Canada, but then it finally went towards its correct destination: Japan. Three more weeks later it fortunately arrived at Japanese customs. One trip around the world, took 12 weeks for delivery, but the other guy was informed by me, kept calm and everything was OK at the end .
Martin It reminds me of grafiti made on a Danish airportcompany SAS commercialposter saying "Breakfirst in Copenhagen - Dinner in New York" and somebody added in poor writing "Lugage in Singapore" Claus C
Claus there is very little comeback for the SELLER its a game of chance.........the buyer can say almost anything and get their money back.I had occasion where i sent an item it was damaged in transit i recovered the price from the courier company [less postage]and sent it to the buyer but i still had to get my item back, how/?.However yu would be better to copy the digital address of ebay to be sure print it out and not hand write anything......

Trading is a matter of trust. You can do some precautions but by mail it will never be like standing in front of each other. When trading, buyer can compare the recieved item to a Photo, and the better photos the smaller chance is for "hidden faults". Buyer also just agree to a specific amount of Cash, often included shipmentcosts. That is basically all seller have to fullfill for buyer. When buyer dont finds hidden faults on the recieved item, not to be seen on photos - or the stuff is broke when they get it - then I understand completely why they dont want the stuff and want their money back. Seller can ensure himself a long way, by using the ex. ebay-mail-system and save all correspondence between each other to proove if buyer come up with unfair claims. Seller can also set certain terms of the way buyer is to recieve the package. Ex. ask buyer to open the package in front of a post-employee and already there say if the item is accepted or not. I do believe such a shipment is called a Valueconsignment. It is also possible to send COD, Cash on delivery. If buyer in these cases dont accept the item, then they wont even get it and it is to be returned to sender. Money then of course have to to back to buyer if he already paid. The shipmentcosts will always be lost in some way, but you will always be able to get your item back, if the buyer dont accept the state it is in. Despite all the precautions you can make, will Trading always be a matter of trust, where both parts can pull a leg. I have recieved lots of packages and sended a lot too (lamps), and I have none bad experiences. It will probably come one day, but I wouldnt let that eat my soul, while I know statistically there will be a long time again before another cheater will show. I use pay-pall while it is easy and you reach a larger range of buyers. COD and value-shipments narrows your selection of buyer I think, but I did use it a couple of times, when my feeling of buyer told me he was a bit of a stickler. The feeling came to me from the writings between us by the emails. Basically I agree with you, but I guess I am more soften on the trust-thing. Look at it the other way around. For a long time it was like: buyer found a item, paid for it and had to sit and hope for it came to him. It is still like that many places - thats also a bit un-secure being a buyer in such a case isnt it?. Claus C
So here is my end of the story: althought the track&trace said it was send to Thailand and arrived there, it was not. Because the next day it was delivered. Once I saw this I called the shipper and they calle me back after some time that is was in taiwan and given to the right person. That was in the morning. In the evening I got an email from the buyer that everything was ok. Phooh, I could breathe again ;-) So after all this adventure ended well.
