I got a load of mantles for 0,5 euro pr. pc. some time ago. They were in clear plasticbags with no logo. A long time after the joy of cheap mantles is gone, I still have the disappointment. Like just now preparing lamps for a feast to night with friends, when this happend Normally these mantles gets small holes in the web when using these mantles and they last short, but this took it all Glad I was there and didnt go to the toilet or so Looking carefull at the plasticbag I found this name on the sealing: I Wonder if they just produced the plasticbag or also the mantle - I guess both could do the same perfomance Claus C
One of our car manufacturers (now sadly long gone - possibly Riley?) said:- 'The quality remains long after the price has been forgotten...' It seems the reverse case is also true - the disappointment remains long after you've spent the pennies you thought you'd saved. Something like that, anyway...
Well, we must not overlook the entertainmentvalue here and that the shock makes one know you still lives That'll be worth a penny here. Claus C
What cp rating is the lantern? The mantle looks a little under-sized for whatever it is on. How many of these mantles did you buy? If they are from China you might want to pass a Geiger counter over them in case they are radioactive. It is a possibility with a anonymous & unbranded product.
I bought the Whole lot Neil Well they had only 20 left and they are not marked anything at all on the bag, but they are same size fysical as my 300-400 mantles. It was bought in a german secondhand military-shop and I had the hope it was better "armyquality", just unmarked. I thought the lamp was a 350, but it is 500 I found out later - but that shouldnt blow a mantle like this anyway. These crappies is also very fragile in use, while they after a shorter use (without blowing) get small holes here and there - almost as the material falls of in spots. So one have to study the mantle before each use and that makes 2 out of 4 useable for as said, shorter time. So still they are bought too cheap Claus C
What else do you have which takes a single-tie mantle & is rated less than 300cp? If a smaller Petromax or Coleman is doing exactly the same thing then the rest of the mantles should go in the bin. I would have asked if I could buy a pair so I could see if they do the same on my Petromax 827B. However. I see you are in Denmark & I am in Britain. I remember getting some cheap mantles for a 500cp Solar. They were blown clean off from where they were tied. I was damn lucky not to have the lamp glass crack.
I bought a boxfull of original Coleman #21 mantles, and they have small holes in them too! They look like my own socks..... These little holes (a match would not fit through them) don't bother me to much, but still, I do keep an eye on them! Not all mantles have this problem, let's say half of them, maybe one thirth. Best regards, Wim
The mantles are made of what appears as a woven tube drawn together or totally closed at one end. It seems like the materials of construction are not great & they are possibly poorly closed at the base. So when they are put under more stress..... Do they mostly fail in the manner depicted in the images?
