I had the joy of fettling this lamp the easy way as to be seen here: Tilley AL21, type 2? These were made with fixed controlcock-units either to the right or to the left, and is the only AL21 with a pressure-releasescrew on the tank just left of the carrier-handle. Enjoy: Claus C

The only AL21 with pressure-release on the tank (not in-build in the pump) is the AL21 type 1. The air-release should sit on the top of the tanks left side, just beside the carrier-handle looking in the beams direction. The type 1 has also fixed controlcock and you can not dismantle that. The controlcock can be mounted for left- or for righthanded and that is not possible to change. The fixed controlcock makes the type 1 about a inch lower than the lamps with controlcocks there is possible to dismantle. I dont know anything about the colours. I have only seen the AL21 type 1 in black. Gratulation TVO with a fine lamp. Its good quality and easy + fun to fettle. Im sure there is a lot of local AL21'igans there can tell you if silver is a genuine option beeing in the AL21's homeland If you doubt your ability to take Photos your self, then I guess the real test comes when you have to upload images here on the cpl. The type 3 also came in silver. This one also on the gallery was unused, not repainted, with Tilley-decals and still carrying papertags from the Tilley company when I got it. It was silver from start: Tilley AL21, type 3 Claus C
I dont quite understand the humor here. I did look the gallery through and found only approximated dates for AL21's also from your self. I didnt look for datestamps when I was cleaning the AL21's and dont know where to look either. Take a look at the colour of these two, date or not - same as my type 3. These silver type 3 is often for sale in Danmark and often unused: Link to expired auction Claus C
We only know approximate dates for the various types of AL21. If they are date stamped then the stamp is on top of the heat deflector cowl. Because this is the bit that gets hot and rusty the stamps are sometimes not easy to read and not all of them were marked anyway. ::Neil::
The cowl is marked "made in England" but no datemark on the type 3, that I didnt even notice before . The type 1 is has no marks at all. Nice to know with the datestamp as a new thing to look for Claus C
Types 1 and 2 are too early to be date marked. I am not sure exactly when type 3 began but I guess in the early 1950s and it seems to have been replaced around the early 1960s. Therefore only some of type 3 could be dated. I would expect the silver colour to be from the late 1950s though and they should be marked but as I said I don't think this model was often dated so even some of the type 4s may not be marked with a date. ::Neil::
