Why would hide the map inside the cover to make it hard to find ?

    Did Pixieland mean something ?

Interesting replacement cap. The use of a steel deflector on an otherwise brass cap still leaves me wondering.

    It is really very simple:
The heat deflector is usually in such an appalling state that replacing it with an ashtray of the right profile & diameter is the only reasonable thing to do. I did the same with a Vapalux 300, though I used a brass one.

Yep, using an old ash-tray is a pretty standard way of restoring the appearance of these hoods and thus, lanterns. In fact, I recall one of our most revered members telling me he used to make a habit of doing this sort of thing in his earlier days. [-X :D

They also have been known to appear on KL80s as smoke deflectors but they're more obvious in that application. Still, they look better than nothing if you don't have one.

BTW, Max - Pixieland on the map is, in fact, the English counties known as Devon and Cornwall. They're both popular holiday destinations so your ashtray will have been a tourist souvenir. Pixies are more usually known as 'piskys' down there - they're the magical 'little people' like sprites and fairies in folklore. You probably have something similar where you live...

    Thank you very much !!

I live in TAIWAN , and bought this 300X recently .

We did not have this kind of ashtray , so it's strange to us !

Looks like one of the paint and polish jobs I used to sell at Steam rallies here in the 1990s. I don't know how many I did but they were all fitted with one of those ash trays and fettled to work and look good. ::Neil::

Yes and it looks just about right on it proportion wise, only slightly oversize so really quite a neat solution.

There could be more to it than just fixing a broken lamp:

I thought it was so that if lost, the lamp could find it's way home

    Graham,

Have you heard if any lamp used this map to return home successfully?
