My first lighting resulted in a flare and the glass cylinder was blackened. I have cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water, rubbing alcohol and lots of elbow grease, but there are still some black marks. I am afraid that I will break the cylinder if I rub it any harder. The cylinder was completely clear upon arrival. Any suggestions for getting it completely clean again?
A light rub with fine wire wool will clean that right off , glass is really hard & will not scracth Stu .
I have had that problem on numerous occasions. I mainly use what in Sweden is called Jif. (In many other countries this is called Cif). It is a really good cleaner and has removed all black spots from the glasses I have. I sometimes use it on tanks as well. Here's how it looks like: Frank
Got it! I tried the vinegar and newspaper, but the marks were too burnt on. Your suggestions of fine abrasives made me think of Bon Ami, a product I have used on fiberglass sailboats. That took it off immediately with no scratches.
If you have a wood stove, wet a towel in water and then dab some ash onto it. That mixture cleans the glass on our stove easy-peasy.
To the hardcore Black carbon on glass I use oven-cleanerspray. It costs 3 Pound and can be used for app 50 glass. Spray - wait - flush under running Water - clean. No rubbing and scratching and it is to be found in all supermarkeds. Claus C.
