Just got a Veritas 350 and noticed that the cage, while complete and everything attached to the right places, still is a bit on the loose side. How can I make it more tight, so that it is not wobbling? I feel that soldering it would be vandalism.
Well, how can I describe it... The cage consists of a bottom plate and a top ring, these being connected through four sticks, leaving enough distance between them for the vapourizer, burner, mantle, etc. to fit inside, along with a globe. 8) So, these sticks are attached to holes of about the same diameter as the sticks themselves in the bottom plate and top ring; by pressure or the like - not soldered or welded. But this concept obviously didn't last for this particular lantern. They are still sitting there but with some slack, hence, not tight. Probably someone in the past has put a sideways pressure on the cage. But what can I do in order to make the sticks again sit tightly in their holes? Should I somehow "heat then beat" on the ends of the stick, like with a rivet? Or do I need to solder the parts together? Or is there a better solution?
Re peen the riveting. Hold each upright in a vice with copper or aluminum facings in the jaws and tap around the ends with a cross pane or ball pane hammer or make a punch with a rounded hollow of suitable size and tap it against the ends
