Hi All The testing is nearly complete on the "Stuman vapouriser conversion" & after a few pitfalls , setbacks , drawing board re-visits & nagging niggles the testing of the final design seems to work well This version has now been running straight for nearly 24 hours with no ballooning of the vapouriser body & the jet staying in place which has been a bit of a pain in other brass vapourisers of this type Once again if anyone has any dead Tilley vapourisers kicking about please don't throw them away , give me a shout as i'd be glad to have them for this project 8) Best regards Stu
I'm pleased to report that Stu's cage extensions are excellent and as I have mentioned before on this forum, when the cage extensions are fitted to a Tilley Guardsman lantern, and a 169 vapouriser is used then the lantern is brighter! Stu's replacement springs for the later Tilley gallery, which has the springs on the outside, also work well! As Stu has already mentioned, there has been a set back with the design of the vapouriser which he sent to me and he is working on solving that problem. He intends to send one of the new style Stuman vapourisers to me for testing, Jeff.
I received the new style Stuman vapouriser recently. I fitted it to my wall lamp and I have had the lamp lit for the last 2 nights, (about 12 hours in total). It's working well, but the lamp needs to be pumped more often than it does when an actual Tilley vapouriser is being used. If this is not done, then the lamp dims, this may be because the jet is rated at 250cp., rather than 300cp.. Marks out of 10 for this vapouriser, I give it 8, Jeff.
Here is an update to my previous post! Today, I checked the burner which I was using for the test. I found that the mixing dome and the air pipes had slackened a little and when I took it apart, I found that the mixing tube had also slackened. That problem has occurred with that particular burner before. The result of that problem is that the lamp needs more pressure than usual or it dims. So the new style Stuman vapouriser was not the cause. It works well! Marks out of 10 for this vapouriser, I now give it 10!
Hi Jeff, I wondered how the rating was a few years on? I spoke to a Sth Korean company that was actually producing this very type of Tilley vapouriser from scratch. They told me they had to abandon the manufacture of the vapourisers as they simply could not make them of a high enough quality at an affordable cost.
Hello Matty, that particular vapouriser worked okay, but in my opinion, it's better to obtain the old style of actual Tilley vapouriser and they are still around.
Would love to know how you seal the screw joint between tube and jet, I had a ridiculous time with my DIY vap tube mods?
