Yep, it's Veritas Superb. I used to have one but sold it on. Too temperamental. Picked this up on the bay last year for the princely sum of £0.99. I think they saw me coming. Was missing it's bail when I got it so I had to make one. Turned out quite well considering I only had the pictures in the gallery to base it on. Repainted with hammerite bronze which is pretty similar to the original finish. Just debating whether to attempt to fire it up or not. I know it'll end in disappointment.

Got a couple of others lit this evening so will leave the Veritas for another time. Happy just to admire it's "superb" looks for tonight.

Getting these running satisfactorily is something of a 'black art'. I had one that did, reliably, until it got a knock that broke the mantle. It's never run properly since, no matter how hard I try.

Your best bet is to use a correct-sized globular mantle that is well-inflated on first lighting. That way will mean the vapouriser tube is kept as hot as possible thus ensuring complete vapourisation of the fuel. Too small a mantle will not be near enough to the vapouriser and the lantern will soon start to flare. On the other hand, too large a mantle will inflate to touch the vapouriser and it'll burn out quicker.

I find just about any other type of lantern is more dependable...

Not sure if the mantle is suitable or not. It's the first thing that came to hand and I stuck it on just for appearances sake. I can see this ending up back on eBay. Never know, might even double my money! £2.00 anyone?

If you're serious, I'll take it off your hands for that, plus shipping to South Africa :D

Well if you really want it it's yours. 'Er indoors is always thrilled to get rid of one out of the house (but not so happy when two more turn up to take its place) . I'm keeping the mantle though cause it's worth more than the lantern. PT me and we'll work something out.
