Are we talking 'live' birds, or ones for cooking?

Well, there are kerosene (usually wick) poultry heaters around...

The problem is keeping insects away from the mantle during the night (a big problem in Australia).

    You could paint your globe...

I assume you are talking about replacing a glass globe on a pressure lamp with a can. Not a problem as this will work just as well as with glass. The heat output will be the same but most of the light will be contained. ::Neil::

I expect there would be more radiated heat from the can than from glass. Why not try it and see how it goes. I can't think of anything that might go wrong with the lamp if you try. Btw, what type of lamp are you thinking of using?

Would you have to open the usually unopened end of the can for the lamp to function correctly?

Would a steel mesh mantle, usually used on a R1 type heater, be worth a try if you wish heat rather than light?

Like a mega sized bowl fire mantle ! Got some mesh here that'll do the trick

Yes, a rolled mesh in the same size as the globe works well. It will reduce some of the light, and is of course sturdier.
But we need to know if that is what's wanted here.
If it's just the overall heat that's wanted, you could just aswell put the lantern in as it is because, just as Neil said, the heat output is still the same.

True  but dependinding on what lamp he intends to use, it might just stop the little ole chooks from walking round with 'arc eye' ;)

I would be using a coleman 220 the reason for the can to minimize lite and to give a little heat
