A friend of mine recently gave me a rather poorly Sea anchor lamp with a view to stripping any useable spares off it and consigning the rest to the bin. this is the lamp below: as you can see it was rather poorly and rusted all over the place: I hate chucking things out if there is a remote chance of repair, so i decided to have a bash and strippede everything down and sanded the rust off.The support rods were well and truly rotten, as was the top of the glass surround. Once the rust had been taken off there was not much left! to replace the rods I found some old steel tent pegs. I cut off the eyes and then threaded each end and added some stainless steel nuts (cost 20p) I then cut out a new surround top from an old cooker tray, drilled holes and added the new rods. they were then attached to the bottom half of the lamp which I had cleaned up and resprayed. The glass was tried for size and fitted perfectly... The tank was pressure tested, cleaned and resprayed as were the vapouriser and hood components. The "rapid starter" was a write off so until I can get a replacement I have blanked the base part off and crimped the feeder tube. I pressure tested the tank again to check there were no leaks around this area.The lamp was finally reassembled and primed. The picture below shows the result..... There are a few adjustments to do, and I will need to replace the pump washer and perhaps seek out a rapid starter. I'm aware that the sea Anchor Brand is not rated too highly amongst some lampers, but for a minimum outlay I have a useable working lamp. I'm not in the postion to throw lots of money out for new spares or compete on fleabay,so its very much a case of making do with what I can get. Total costs so far are about £2.50 and with new washers I would imagine I'll be nearer the £10 mark. I'm happy with the result and it's been a good learning curve. Onto my next project?

Nice job! I won't diss the sea anchor at all - other than the preponderance of steel instead of brass! My sea anchor is fantastic (other than the rust) and lights quicker than my Hipolito and Petromax lanterns. Again, I use the spirit dish rather than the fast light which didn't seal properly anyway... I would suggest making sure that the inside of the lantern isn't rusting away though.
